Each enzyme has a characteristic pH value at which it catalyzes its reaction with the fastest rate and optimum capacity. This specific pH is termed it be its optimum pH . Optimum pH can be both acidic or alkaline for any enzyme depending on its type. Change in the pH level in the environment or medium of reaction leads to change in concentration of H+ ions. These ions alter the structure of the enzyme or substrate either by breaking the already existing bonds or creating new additional bonds with any of the two proteins available.
