Elaborate and Evaluate Assignment: MAED 5353 Prompt Response Name Heidi Woodall Current position (if applicable) Teacher If currently teaching, grade level: 3 rd Grade If currently teaching, subject(s): Math/Science Teaching certification (if applicable): EC-6 Generalist ESL Certification Prompt Response Which learning module did you complete? Variation about the Mean Attach your (handwritten) homework to the end of this document. Check you work against the given answers. What was your biggest learning or aha! from this module? Explain. My biggest learning or aha from this module is the variation in the data set. When the information is all the same or close to the same then the data isn’t interesting. What is still confusing or was difficult about the learning in this module? Explain. Something that is confusing is the squared deviation. I am not sure what the importance is of finding it in our data set. What can you apply from this module to your classroom? Be specific and draw from the standards. (This response should be fairly lengthy, e.g., 500 words). In this module, I can apply the way that Professor Kader introduced the ideas of finding the mean without using an equation to solve for it. He challenged them to find the mean by moving the actual blocks to find the possible mean. They realized that moving the stacks until they were all even or as even as possible they would be able to find the mean in the data. They also looked at various line plots and used that to begin discussing standard deviations in the data. From there they began find thing the MAD of a data set. At first when looking at this they were not given the formula. They were walked through how to solve for it before being given the formula. At the end of the video they showed how these results are used in real life by showing data they collected from the Charles River in an effort to clean up the harbor. They collected data from before the harbor began to get clean and after and compared the two results to show that the cleaning was working. Something important I can take away from this is the importance of representing data in various 1 3/21/24 19:19 a3/p3
ways. When we look at information just one singular way then the data begins to feel stagnant. By representing the information various ways, we are able to see more in our data set. I also like how all that is being learned applies to the real world. Being able to see all the variances helps you to get a better understanding of the information you have gathered. We don’t really do anything in 3 rd grade where students must calculate the mean, median, mode. Our students are expected to be able to interpret data based off of the data set they are given and also be able to find the difference between two data points. 2 3/21/24 19:19 a3/p3
