Instructions
Follow the instructions for Problem Set 1
and Problem Set 2
. Use SPSS to complete steps 1, 2, and 3, then use your SPSS Output and Graphs to complete step 4. Paste the required information in the spaces indicated in this document for steps 1, 2, and 3. Fill in the blanks of the template paragraph in step 4. Be sure to use your values and labels as discussed in your learning materials.
Problem Set 1
Instructions for Problem Set 1
Read the problem set information and data below, then complete steps 1, 2, and 3 using SPSS. From your data, complete step 4. A behavioral psychologist is interested in if the breed of the horse (Quarter, Thoroughbred, or Paint) is related to the number of hours the horse is ridden each week. That is, does breed of horse relate to the number of hours a week owners ride that horse? He randomly samples 30 participants at a local veterinary asking them the breed of their horse (Quarter Horse, Thoroughbred, or Paint): 10 Quarter Horses, 10 Thoroughbred Horses, and 10 Paint Horses. The researcher then asked each participant how many hours on average a week they ride that horse. TIP: You must reformat the data into an SPSS spreadsheet for SPSS to conduct the correct analysis.
Scores:
Quarter Horse
Thoroughbred
Paint Horse

Step 1: SPSS Data and Variable View
1.
Enter the data into SPSS in Data view.
2.
Complete the following five tasks in Variable view: a.
Name the variables.
b.
Set the number of decimal places to match the data.
c.
Label the variables.
d.
Enter values IF it is a categorical variable.
e.

Step 2: SPSS Output
1.
Based on the research scenario, determine whether you should run a One-Way Between-Subjects ANOVA OR a One-Way Repeated-Measures/Within-Subjects ANOVA.
2.
Run the ANOVA you determined best fits the research scenario.
a.
Include all options used in the example video.
NOTE: Depending on the version of SPSS you are using, some of the required boxes to check shown in the videos will be under different tabs than the video shows. All the options are there, but SPSS moves them around a bit, depending on your downloaded version. b.
For the EM Means option, select Display Means For: (Overall) and the Factor Name
c.
Use a two-tailed test (SPSS default) with a 0.05 alpha level.
3.
*ONLY IF NECESSARY
, include follow-up/post hoc tests. TIP: Two criteria must be met before you run post hoc tests. a.
Use a two-tailed test (SPSS default) with a 0.05 alpha level for each data set.
TIP: Make sure you have the same tables in the output that are shown in the video. If you do not, then you missed something.
4.
Snip/export the output from SPSS.
5.
Paste the output here:
Step 3: SPSS Bar Graph
1.
Based on the research scenario, determine the correct type of bar graph to run.
2.
In SPSS, create the type of bar graph you determined best fits the research scenario. 3.
Include the following settings:
a.
Y-axis starts at 0.
b.
Title both the X & Y-axis based on the scenario.
c.
Title both bars on the X-axis based on the scenario.
d.
Include error bars.
e.
Do not include a title above the graph.
4.
Snip/export the graph from SPSS.
5.
Paste the graph here:
Step 4: Results
1.
Based on the research scenario, select the correct APA write-up paragraph from the options below that
reflects the ANOVA you ran and whether your ANOVA indicates a significant effect or not.
Option 1: One-Way Between-Subjects ANOVA paragraph - Significant
A one-way between-subjects analysis of variance was completed on mean DV as a function of IV (
n
= _). A significant effect was observed, F
(
df
between, df within) = ___ , p = ___, partial eta-squared
= __. The significant F
-test was followed up with the Tukey HSD test for multiple comparisons (
SE
= ). Describe the actual comparisons themselves, including (
M
= __, SD
= __) for each condition, and the (
p
= __) for each comparison. TIP: There are three comparisons when there are 3 levels of an IV.
Option 2: One-Way Between-Subjects ANOVA paragraph - Non-Significant
A one-way between-subjects analysis of variance was completed on mean DV as a function of IV (
n
= _). No significant effect was found, F
(
df
between, df
within) = ___ , p
= ___, partial η
2
= __.
Option 3: One-Way Repeated Measures/Within-Subjects ANOVA paragraph - Significant
A one-way repeated-measures analysis of variance was completed on mean DV
as a function of IV (
n = _). A significant effect was observed, F
(
df
between, df
within) = , p = , partial eta-squared = . The significant F
-test was followed up with the Bonferroni test for multiple comparisons. Describe the actual comparisons themselves, including (
M = , SD = ) for each condition, and the (
p = _
) for each comparison.
TIP: There are three comparisons when there are 3 levels of an IV. Option 4: One-Way Repeated Measures/Within-Subjects ANOVA paragraph - Non-Significant
A one-way repeated-measures analysis of variance was completed on mean DV
as a function of IV
(
n = _). No significant effect was found, F
(
df
between, df
within) = , p = , partial η
2
= _
.

Fill in the blanks and replace any guiding information on the write-up paragraph you determined best fits the research scenario. As you complete your selected paragraph, be sure to follow these guidelines:
n and degrees of freedom (
df
between and df
within) are reported as whole numbers.
F
, partial η
2
, M
, and SD are rounded and reported to two decimal places.
p is reported to three decimal places. o
Only exception: when SPSS reads p = “.000” o
Then, you should type p < .001 NOTE: Nothing should be underlined in your write ups. The underlining in the template paragraphs represent blank places that should be filled in with information.

Problem Set 2
Instructions for Problem Set 2
Read the problem set information and data below, then complete steps 1, 2, and 3 using SPSS. From your data, complete step 4.
A study was carried out to determine if the popularity of the cause in a propaganda film would affect the degree to which participants would remember the major issues (0 to 20) in a film.
The researcher randomly sampled 25 participants at a local movie theatre, asking each if they would like to participate in research studying the effects of a movie theater. All 25 participants agreed to watch a movie and
answer questions about the movie during three different sessions.
Immediately after seeing the film, each subject was asked to list as many issues raised by the film as they could remember (recall1). All participants were called a week later and again asked to recall as many issues raised by the film as they could (recall2). Six months later they were again called in to list issues (recall3).
