1. Read the Abstract for the following article by Newman et al. (2012): https://link.springer.com/article/10.3758/s13423-012-0292-0 , then answer the following questions about their Experiments 1A/1B: a. ( 2 points ) Describe the factorial design that was used in these experiments, including how many IVs there were, what the levels of these IVs were, and whether each IV was manipulated within-subjects or between- subjects.b. (2 points) List the possible effects that could be found in this sort of experimental design. A. They used a 2x2x2 factorial design so there are 3 IVs (photograph, familiarity, and claim) each with 2 levels (photograph: yes or no, familiarity: familiar, unfamiliar, claim: alive or dead). The photographs and familiarity were manipulated within-subjects, and the claim was manipulated between-subjects. B. The main effects of photograph, familiarity, and claim. Interaction effects: photograph x familiarity, familiarity x claim, photograph x claim, photograph x familiarity x claim 2. (2 points) Explain what the terms central tendency and variability refer to in the context of descriptive statistics. What two statistics do psychologists typically report to communicate each of these pieces of information about any variable they have measured? - Central tendency and variability are used to describe the data that was collected in a sample or provide a summary for a set of data. The two statistics that psychologists typically report are the mean and the standard deviation to communicate the central tendency and variability. 3. (4 points) Find a recent news article from any major news outlet (e.g., NY Times, Washington Post, CNN, BBC, NPR, Bloomberg, etc.) in which a descriptive statistic of some kind is presented. Provide a link to this article and copy and paste the passage from this article in which a descriptive statistic is presented (using quotation marks). Answer the following: What information does this statistic communicate? Do you think the statistic itself and the way in which it is interpreted by the author of the article are appropriate and accurate, or potentially misleading? How so? - “For each of the last three years there have been more than 600 mass shootings - almost two a day on average.” ( https://www.bbc.com/news/world- us-canada-41488081 ) - This statistic “average” (mean) communicates that each day there are most likely 2 mass shootings. I believe the way this statistic is interpreted is very accurate and appropriate
for this particular news article because it really shows how common mass shootings are and it makes the reader feel scared like it is supposed to.
