2 Defining Postmodernism and Social Cnstructionism Our concept of postmodernism is that everyone we interact with has their own unique set of social constructions. Each person has their own reality; our interactions are shaped by our beliefs, values, and other factors. The method we learn about the world around us is referred to as social construction. Our world is shaped by our ability to communicate and engage with others. Ideas of Postmodernism The fact that postmodernism emphasizes the reality that there is no single truth is evident and persuasive. The truth can be subjective, depending on one's world perspective. Each individual has a unique culture, cultural identity, customs, and life experiences. Our interpretation of reality would be different from everyone else's. Our reality is socially formed, even if it is subjective. Language, interactions, and our perspective of the world all contribute to the construction of reality. As a result, there can't be a single truth. Relationship between Systems Theories and Postmodernism Systems theory and postmodernism are linked by how people interact with one another. The study of systems within larger, more complex systems is known as systems theory. The focus of systems theory is on the interactions that occur within the system. Individual interactions are the center of postmodernism. Postmodernism and Social Constructionism on MFT The first and most crucial consideration for a marriage and family therapist who embraces postmodernism and social constructionism is language. Our responsibility is to process and comprehend the client's language (Glass, 2019). We can work more effectively if we grasp the clients' points of view.
3 Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion Everything about the definition of family would be different in the 1950s. The leader of the home was a man (spouse or father) (making decisions, etc.) The female figure handled the domestic childcare tasks, and the children were expected to behave. These were ideas on how to communicate, act, and look. A "typical" family was assigned to a white, middle-class family (Northcentral University, 2017). Families can now take on a variety of social structures as the times have changed (Glass, 2019). Families' variations had to be taken into account by larger societal systems. All of the changes meant that marriage and family therapists had to adapt; they couldn't look at family dynamics from the 1950s. This shift in how we regard families is exemplified by postmodernism. Postmodernists believe that there are multiple paths to choose from and that each person's social construction is unique. Diversity, equality, and inclusion are highlighted in this model. Recovery Model The recovery model is a concept that recognizes that persons with significant psychiatric disabilities can overcome their challenges and go on to live full and productive lives (Oken, Craig, Ridgway, et al., 2017). This can be accomplished in stages (person-centered elements of recovery, hope, sense of agency, self-determination, and so on). Questions and Concerns Overall, I have a general understanding of postmodernism and social constructionism. With the recovery model, I could have a better understanding of that. My question is, how are Postmodern and Social constructionism implemented in a session with clients? Can you choose
