1 Discuss Postmodernism, Social Constructionism, and the Recovery Model School of Social Behavior Science, Northcentral University MFT- 5105: Recovery-Oriented Care and Postmodern Family Therapy Dr. Benjamin Evans April 2 nd , 2022
2 Discuss Postmodernism, Social Constructionism, and the Recovery Model Social Constructionism: What are some of the constructs related to social constructionism? What are the similarities and differences between systems theory and social constructionism? The term epistemology is the question that leads us to ask, how do we know what we know? A Social Constructionist answer will be that people "construct knowledge." They build social connections and develop knowledge through social interactions. In our reality, there are several connecting aids: Reality, language, identity, discourse, and positioning. Both systems theory and social constructionism are concerned with human social interaction. People's identities, perceptions, and attitudes are influenced by their social interactions. The use of two different metaphors distinguishes systems theory from social constructionism. Postmodern Philosophy: What are the primary postmodern assumptions? What are some of the differences between modernist and postmodernist therapists? - Postmodernism is based on several assumptions. Freedom and Comb's postmodern Narrative context and Anderson's Collaborative approach were highlighted by Dr. Valerie Glass in the book An Introduction to MFT.
3 Jill Freedom and Gene Combs, both narrative therapists, discovered four basic assumptions. Reality is a product of social construction. Language is used to form realities. Narrative is used to organize and maintain realities. There is no such thing as absolute truth. Harlene Anderson assumptions for a collaborative approach: Human systems are systems that generate language and meaning. Rather than separate individual brain processes, social action is used to generate reality. The self becomes a social-relational composition, and the individual mind becomes a social composition. Language is generative, providing structure and meaning to our lives and the world around us and serving as a means of social interaction. Postmodernists vary from modernists in that they believe there are multiple "truths" to how humans find meaning in the world, but modernists believe there is only one "answer." Recovery Model: What are the primary components of this model? - The primary components of the recovery model is: Person-centered elements of recovery.
