2 Define the term “bias” and describe the two types of bias 1. Bias is defined as an attitude or opinion held by a person that is influenced by that person's prior preconceptions. Bias can be classified into two types: conscious bias, which is purposeful, intentional, and explicit, and unconscious bias, which is unintentional, non-deliberate, and implicit. The word "conscious bias" refers to purposeful, intentional, and explicit bias. Explain how understanding bias will help you make appropriate referrals and find suitable resources for your client (in this case, Amal). 2. It is critical to understand prejudice in order to make appropriate recommendations and locate relevant resources for your client. It is critical that you are aware of any potential biases that may be at work and how those prejudices may affect your client in order to give the best care possible. Furthermore, it is critical to be aware of any potential power dynamics that may exist and to assess how these may affect interactions between the client and the service provider.  Looking back at the Identifying Client Characteristics Chart you completed in Week 2, identify at least two (2) significant differences that exist between you and Amal. These differences might include religious beliefs, sexual orientation, gender identification, socioeconomic status (SES), etc. Detail how these differences might relate to bias and/or impact the care Amal receives. 3. I must admit that Amal and I are not identical in many ways. Amal and I have one thing in common: I was reared as a Christian. Another distinction between Amal and I is our socioeconomic status (SES), with Amal having a lower SES than I do. These discrepancies may be due to bias, in the sense that different people may have different beliefs about persons of different religions and social backgrounds. This could cause a lot of issues, such Amal being judged or treated differently than someone of a different religion or social class. As a result, Amal may not be treated with the same level of respect or attention that someone of a different faith or social standing would receive. This could have an impact on Amal's treatment.   Summarize some strategies that you (as an individual working within the human and social services field) can use to minimize the impact of bias. 4. Some ways for reducing the impact of bias include being aware of and understanding your own biases, being aware of the power dynamics that may be at work and being open to learning about and respecting your customers' and clients' lifestyles, beliefs, and values. Furthermore, it is critical to be sensitive to foreign cultures and to be aware of the possibilities of language barriers. Finally, it is critical to avoid passing judgment on customers and to work hard to guarantee that all customers have equal access to the same resources and services. In general, having a solid grasp of bias and how it manifests itself is essential to provide the highest quality service and resources to your customers. You will be able to better comprehend the requirements of your client and give the highest possible level of care if you take the time to notice and address any potential differences between you and your client, as well as any power dynamics that may be present.
