6-2 Activity: Reflection: Society | 1 Shalee Kauanoe June 13, 2023 SNHU Module 6: 6-2 Activity: Reflection: Society
6-2 Activity: Reflection: Society | 2 Based upon my topic, if I chose to use different lenses to analyze Facebook, I think I would want to have chosen the History lens. Over the time period we had with this project, I was able to learn more than I imagined about Facebook. I have learned the majority if not all social media platforms, all have influences and both positive and negative affects of its existence. As we all know, Facebook has been around for so many years that it has become an adjacent prospect to everyone and their social lifestyle. Since the creation till current days, you can relive memories, and your past if you chose to through Facebook. However, since this social media platform consist of so much information of one person, a person can see and review their own and other people’s timelines, which then gives people a way to see their past post and stories. Some like myself, use them as memories and save them to new phones and devices to reminisce and imagine on that specific time or memory. According to History Today, they stated “The Internet has taken forward the capability offered by the telephone for instantaneous communication between spatially separate individuals” (History Today 2020). With that being said, Facebook has definitely given more interaction, which mends the gap that leave people separated from society and other as well. It gives back that interaction and connection to people, even if it is using a phone screen and limiting engagement with people in person. However, how the history lens could teach me more about Facebook, is to compare and discover how interactions and engagement has changes from the past, prior to any social media platforms and how it is still changing today’s society and life. Learning through the history lens, allows people to understand the life there was before social media and Facebook came to be, meaning the actual people-to-people engagement, and how people would be willing to learn about others through real conversations with each other. There could be also room to learn about the history of Facebook and the history during that timeframe when Facebook was created. Overall, I do not
6-2 Activity: Reflection: Society | 3 think it would make a huge change, yet it can change the views and information that may be used and found if using the history lens instead of the Humanities lens. Based upon my example I chose for this assignment, I myself am a Facebook user, so I am familiarized with its evolution and creation of time. Although, I may not utilize Facebook for anything other than staying connected with family and friends as well as entertainment, I do rely on Facebook more now than before or in the past. Some reason as to why I enjoy it is that I can find out anything from, new clothing trends, music, trending items and fashion as well as being able to call and video call with family who live far. Meanwhile, all while learning and analyzing the information that I was receiving and finding, out about Facebook and what it does for people in this time and age; how life evolved around a simple social media platform. Stepping back and seeing it through the different lenses, also helped me to discover what the world is truly about and how we digest information given from different ports. For example, talking to a person you can build an instant internal connection, but if you meet someone on a website or social media, there a connection made but it is not as intense as if you were to physically engage yourself with another human being. Interaction and making connection are the remedy for some individual in todays society, sometimes being alone makes people feel some type of way that only Facebook, and other social media platforms can provide. I guess you can say it is similar to a remedy for those who lack communication, who can’t seem to talk to people face-to-face etc. For what ever the reason may be, this assignment has taught me more than just what Facebook is all about, it revealed to me the depth of how to understand and analyze things. Overall, I can utilize Facebook and this tips of analyzing in my own life. I can take what I learned from here and apply it to my daily living. Such as making time for personal connections with others more often then before, it is what keeps the connection alive. Or else people will become strangers to each other.

6-2 Activity: Reflection: Society | 4 I think eventually, technology will try to overtake the world and try to run the human lives but of course there is so much to improve before then. As we come to the end and as we wrap up critical analyzing, it is proven by many ways and facts that popular culture helps people like me to interact with others and not feel alone in this crazy world. Above all, popular culture can be in anything, especially with the fast shift and new ways to find and explore life through different ways and forms. Using Facebook in my own life has given me the secure feeling because I can use it to keep in communication with family and friends, being that I live here in Las Vegas and the rest of my family living in Hawaii. Also, electronics and technology that we use today all have to do with popular culture and popularity. Everyone including myself would love to have a new iPhone or Samsung galaxy touch screen phone, why is that, maybe because of the hype that is put out there to attract these materialistic items. The same also goes for fashion, a lot of people or women, should I say, that explore and spend extra money at times, to purchase the same outfit of a celebrity or similar to it. Everything has a hype or interest and that is what draws so much attention to social media platforms like Facebook. It is not only used to share and communicate, but also to experience and search for popular culture and major examples which makes up todays pop culture.
