Provide a brief description of the family system you selected. The Family system I selected would be A blended family system consisting of stepparents and stepsiblings Due to increases in divorce, cohabitation, and remarriage, American families are becoming more diverse and complex , because their parents had children in a previous relationship the shared children have older half-siblings. Many children gain younger half-siblings when their parents have other children in the new relationship. The older half-siblings of shared children are stepchildren; they live with a biological parent and a stepparent, so although shared children themselves may not have stepparents, they may live in a household in which stepparent–stepchild relationships exist . (Meyer, Cancian, & Cook, 2005. Explain potential barriers or challenges this family might encounter. Researchers have shown that shared children scored lower than other, groups of siblings on a variety of outcomes, such as educational attainment, antisocial behavior, and depressive symptoms (Apel & Kaukinen, 2008; Halpern-Meekin & Tach, 2008; Harcourt, Adler- Baeder, Erath, & Pettit, 2015; Strow & Strow, 2008; Tillman, 2008). Lack of attention is another barrier these families might tend to face, they feel their attention will be taken away and given to another child ( that is if the new couple decided to have another child together or other parent Favoritism from biological siblings will occur because they fill that another person or people have come into their lives to take the place of their parents or previous parent, and this is most like to cause friction. Abuse is one that most people do not talk about. Explain how a social worker might address this barrier on an individual, family, organizational, group, or community level. In most cases, Abuse is one of the most common barriers a social worker might address, by helping to address the challenges the family is facing Advocating for the child, Social workers are on the front lines protecting children and assisting them in finding safe living situations Reference: Kirst-Ashman, K.
