1 Resiliency Theory to Case Study Gabrielle McBean Dr. Regina Marcella Varin-Mignano SOCW 6060: Social Work Theory and Practice Walden University
2 Map the client’s crisis using the five stages of the crisis. According to Turner (2017), crisis theory involves five key elements: hazardous event, vulnerable state, precipitating factor, state of active crisis, stage of reintegration, and crisis solution stage to restore the client's equilibrium. Paula's chronic medical and mental health diagnoses are considered situational crises since they do not relate to developmental factors (Turner, 2017). Her vulnerable state has resulted in depression, shame, and low self-esteem for Paula. The precipitating factors in Paula's case are her inability to fulfill her motherly duties due to her mental and physical health issues, which has led to her active crisis characterized by non-compliance with her psychiatric and medical treatment plans. Her non-compliance further hinders her ability to fulfill her motherly responsibilities. Paula's reintegration process would involve her complying with her medical and psychiatric treatment plans to improve her overall wellbeing. The better Paula adheres to her treatment plans, the more likely she is to be able to manage her conditions more effectively, leading to a reduction in her depression and an improvement in her self-esteem. Describe the client’s assets and resources   Paula appears to prioritize her role as a mother and truly cares for her children. She has a strong relationship with her two children and that serves as a motivating force. Additionally, Paula's son plays a supportive role for Paula and helps with his little sister when he can. Beyond her immediate family, Paula's ex-husband also provides support, despite not being her daughter's biological father. Furthermore, Paula is unable to work due to her disabilities and has been approved for Medicaid and Social Security Disability Insurance. Additionally, she has applied for WIC and the federal Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. Given
3 Paula's low income, health condition, and Medicaid status, she is eligible for in-home childcare assistance through New York's public assistance program. Describe how you, the social worker, will intervene to assist the client to reach the reintegration stage of the crisis. Be sure that the intervention promotes resiliency. The first step in helping Paula attain reintegration and boost her resilience would be to improve her compliance with medical and psychiatric medication orders. By restoring some sense of normalcy to Paula's life, she would be able to improve her functioning and feel better. Paula can also be encouraged to engage in activities as a mother to break up the negative narrative (Turner, 2017). Paula may also benefit from participating in a self-esteem group or a support group for individuals with HIV/AIDS or Hepatitis C, as these groups can address her presenting issues while also providing her with resources and support. Having social support and engaging in positive activities are key factors in enhancing resilience (Turner, 2017). Explain how using crisis theory and resiliency theory together help in working with a client. When integrating crisis theory and resiliency theory, the social worker can provide a more balanced and holistic approach to supporting the client. They can address the client's immediate crisis needs while also helping them to recognize and develop their internal and external resources to navigate through the current crisis and build long-term resilience. This approach can lead to more effective and sustainable outcomes for the client, as it addresses both the immediate crisis and the client's long-term ability to cope and thrive.
