ECE 450 Field Exp B December 17, 2023 Clinical Field Experience B: Pre-Assessment Implementation During my field experience, I believe it went as I anticipated. Most of the students in the class were able to break up the words with syllables; There were a few changes that were needed to be made. The main change we had to make for the students who had a difficult time grasping the dynamics of breaking up the words. As a result of this we used words that were more easier considering the amount of time we had. This was because there were activities that were taking place in school because of Christmas break. When it was time to tackle the accommodations and student’s needs during the pre-assessment, my mentor and I went over my data taken. Most students were able to break apart the syllables while the others found it hard. Majority of the students were able to identify some letters and identify phonemes. My suggestion was to go over the basics by teaching the students on letter sounds individuality and that some letters sound can be the same. My reasoning was to ensure that the students were able to get more familiar with letter and sound identification purposes. The results that the pre assessment revealed that the students in the classroom are able to understand phonological awareness. My mentor also explained to me that even there were students in
the classroom having difficulties fully grasping and processing all the information, they will continue to learn the rules of ELA as they move forward into their education. Of course, there are many students who are not able to grasp the concept of sound manipulation fully, this is why it is important to allow those students some extra time for help. Teachers can take advantage of the times when students are doing independent work, morning time, or during small group. Based on pre-assessment data, the interventions, and the next steps that I believe the small groups need are just more time working with l words to break apart syllables and figuring out their sounds once they are put together. For example, manipulating the sounds in words that like recognizing which words in a set of words begin with the same sound as (“Bell, bike, and boy all have /b/ at the beginning.”). In my opinion I believe if students are provided with an additional amount of time and with practice the students will have a better understanding of sound manipulation. With this data that I gathered I do not think the students needed any other help other than the additional help provided by the teacher. Lastly, in order to ensure that I am implementing ethical and responsible assessment practices when gathering and analyzing the data I will include gathering, observing, documenting, and assessing each child's development and learning are essential processes in order for me to plan and implement effective strategies to meet the needs of my students.
