Belonging Humans all need to belong to one thing or another; family, romantic partner, friend, work, and even the things we like to do or believe in. For me, a sense of belonging means to be accepted, needed, appreciated, supported, and part of the group or community that allows me to give back in the same manner while being myself. “Researchers have determined that belongingness is an evolutionary need for safety, support, and connection” (Keene, 2023). Over the years my need to belong has changed. I used to think that to feel like I belonged I had to blend in and go with the flow. The need I had to be part of something let me lose myself in the process. I would conform to what I perceived as the way to belong to this group or that one. Through it all, I never felt like I fit in, not even with my family. Unlike my brother and cousins, I did not struggle in school or have social issues, because of this they always found a way to leave me out or make me feel bad about it so at times I would purposely not do well or stay to myself. As I have grown and gained knowledge and experiences, I have come to realize that to truly belong I must be myself, the good, the bad, the ugly, and the crazy. These are all a part of me, and true acceptance can only come from showing people who I am and letting them in. We all belong to one group or community; I am Pagan and belong to a coven. My coven has very much become my family, community, network, and support. We are welcoming and encourage everyone who is Pagan or interested in it to join. We come together to make offerings, celebrate, and learn from one another without judgment. Membership is determined by similar values, beliefs, and attitudes. Members of the coven provide safety and support so those who are part of it can be open to exploring our crafts without threats or fear of retribution from those who do not understand our beliefs. The benefits of being a member of the coven are support, understanding, happiness, a sense of knowing I am not alone, a family, and improved satisfaction
with life and self-esteem. “In addition to such physical and psychological resources, group membership also arguably provides individuals with a sense of belonging and social connectedness (Correll & Park, 2005; Johnson et al., 2006)” (Knowles, 2008). The dynamics of my coven are completely different from the other groups or communities I belong to. The way I belong to it is not the same as I belong when I am with my blood family, work, or the small town I live in. Persuasion The opioid crisis is every individual’s concern even if you do not use them because chances are someone you know does. You may be thinking it doesn’t happen in your community, but you are wrong. Opioid dependency does not discriminate and happens so many times with individuals that you would never think it could happen to. According to Lebeau Leibovici (2023, pg. 6), white men from just outside mid-size cities and the country have a higher rate of opioid addiction, mostly due to a decline in work in these areas. Opioid overdoses are at an all-time high and continue to grow despite the new rules and regulations that have been placed on pharmaceutical companies. If you are not impacted by the deaths and overdoses, you may want to look at the economic impact it has. According to MacLean, Mallatt, and Simmon (2020), the estimated economic cost was well into the billions if not trillions. Health care, crime rate, the labor market, and family aid have gone up because of the opioid crisis. So even indirectly you are affected by opioid overdoses. It is time to remove the social stigmas and conditioning behind the addiction. To do this we need to look at the biases, heuristics, and misconceptions, as well as look at all sides of the
information to make informed decisions to solve the problem. Be part of the solution because every one of us is affected by the opioid crisis one way or another. Principles The principles used were looking at biases, heuristics, self-biases, critical thinking, and communication. I chose these principles because I think we often view the crisis as something that does not impact us because of biasedness, social conditioning, lack of information, or too much information. Even if I had never been directly impacted by an overdose, I believe that looking at other points of view like the economic aspect there is reason to look at one's social responsibility to help find a solution. So yes, in the future I will no longer say it is not my problem because it is. I live in a poor country area that has seen a spike in overdoses since COVID. References Keene, B. M. (2023).
