REFLECTION GRAPHIC ORGANIZER 2 Reflection: Graphic Organizer The objective of this paper is to reflect on creating an assignment for my students for next school year. As I mull over the details of completing the graphic organizer assignment, I can’t help but feel proud of the assignment I created. Through the process of deciding what content to create the assignment for, I took some time to glance back through my newly ended school year to reflect on some assignments. I looked for areas that were lacking, in hopes to create something more positive for the future. After much time contemplating, researching, and reading our class textbook, I decided to go with a Venn diagram. I believe a Venn diagram was most effective in this assignment and for the chosen content because it required students to find similarities and differences. Using the Venn diagram will allow my students to easily add characteristics to each biome, in addition to having the space for the similarities of the biomes in comparison to one another. Through the process, I looked into some cut and paste options, bubble maps and others, however with the cut and paste option it was more of an assignment, and only included information for each topic, the bubble map I didn’t go with just because I was looking for something comparing three topics. In the end, I’m happy with my choice of a Venn diagram as this is one of the first assignments I’ve created on my own. In the future, I hope to learn more ways to create more in-depth assignments. The Challenge At the beginning of the week when I first began reading about this assignment, I became nervous at the thought of creating my own assignment. As a beginning teacher many of my resources have come from other teachers or been given to me, however, this past school year I did gain experience in creating tests. The challenge I faced was honestly, how to create a graphic organizer in a word document. I looked into adding shapes, cutting pictures of graphic organizers
REFLECTION GRAPHIC ORGANIZER 3 adding text boxes over it and more. I eventually settled with using smart art in word, going to relationship, and selecting a Venn diagram. I am thankful that I ran into this challenge, as I would like to create more assignments, graphics, and such in the future, so taking this baby step to figure out a Venn diagram is a small step in the direction I’d like to go in! In hindsight, I probably could have asked someone to tell me how to create a Venn diagram, however by not asking it allowed me to play around and discover more options in Word that I didn’t know were available, therefore I wouldn’t change how I completed the assignment. While I did face a challenge or two in this assignment, I’m glad that I did as it provided me with the opportunity to learn and grow as an educator. Using the Graphic Organizer In a few short months I will be going into my third year of teaching. In these last two years I have learned a lot about graphic organizers and how they enhance student learning. For example, one way that I like to use graphic organizers is to introduce new concepts. By presenting the information in a visual format that involves writing, students can see how different ideas can be relatable and how something so little fits into the bigger picture, which is dire for explaining the hierarchy of shapes, whew! I have learned to appreciate graphic organizers as they help my kiddos have a clear structure for organizing their thoughts and notes, otherwise the writing goes slanted and all over the page. The other way I use graphic organizers in my classroom is for reading comprehension. By using a graphic organizer such as a story map, or bubble map, students can visualize the relationships and characteristics of different events or characters in a story. Being able to see these relationships, students can then better understand the plot of the story. Graphic organizers are important tools for us as educators because they provide a clear structure for organizing information and help students better understand concepts.

REFLECTION GRAPHIC ORGANIZER 4 Conclusion All in all, this assignment and creating an assignment has been a valuable lesson creating content. My goal was to create an assignment that is productive and useful with my future students and to reflect through the process of doing so. I learned how to create graphic organizers within a word document and how to pick the best graphic organizer based on the content being taught. I am excited to put my graphic organizer to use in my classroom by helping my students organize their notes and thoughts as we go through the new school year together. Overall, I am happy with my created assignment and my reflection and hope to continue to use a process such as this one in the future.
