Jahalah Pettigrew ECE 360 March 18, 2024 Jonna Espinoza A Clinical Field Experience B: Classroom Routines and Activities Classroom Observed for Preschool (ages 3-5) I discovered that the school had a literacy program where families, students, and teachers worked together to improve reading comprehension. Since this program involves several English language learners, we developed a program where parents and their children come to the classroom and the teacher works with the child to teach the parents how to read different books in English. In this way, teachers build a sense of community and trust with children and families. Her second routine that I observed at the center was called "Legacy Mom." This is a group of mothers whose children attend early childhood classes that meet weekly at the center. They work with specific staff at the center and are given a discussion topic each week to discuss and come up with different ideas to improve the situation and share tips on how they have been successful. After the discussion, there will be an opportunity to play with the children in the classroom. The last routine I observed was that this center has set up a parent cafe where parents from the center come to the center once a week in the evening to interact with other parents do team-building activities, and then take time to discuss serious issues. The idea is that each of these routines promotes family engagement and allows families to build relationships not only with teachers but also with other parents in the community. Allowing families to develop reading skills with their children can go a long way toward helping them and their children succeed. Family involvement helps create consistency between the home and school environments. The positive results for engaged parents are impressive (Start Early, 2021). I would like to implement these different routines in my classroom. There are several people in my class who are learning English, and I think they would benefit from taking a reading course with their children. Many English learners are not very confident in their reading comprehension. Therefore, if they can combine what they know with what I can teach them, it will not only help the child but also themselves. However, I would create a book club for the whole family and decide to have one night each week for students to come read, do crafts, and get a special treat to go with the book. Parents can volunteer to read the story, or I can do it for them. Reference Start Early. (2021). The Importance of Family Engagement. https://startearly.org/post/importance-of- family-engagement/
