Sociological Theory Key Points Durkheim's Anomie Theory Durkheim’s Anomie Theory is used to explain that society functions better when it maintains a system that is in tune and in sync with each other. This theory focuses on social disintegration while trying to maintain a balance between falling behind in society and prospering in society and why it’s important. Merton's Strain Theory Merton's Strain Theory is a theory that explains why goals are set and maintained by society even if they are not reachable or obtainable, they are still in place. When using this theory, everyone that goes by this theory is equal and believes that every member in the society can be just as successful as the others. If some has trouble obtaining those goals and start to struggle, then those goals can be modified or shifted to help. Agnew's General Strain Theory Agnew's General Strain Theory takes Merton's Strain Theory and modifies it. Agnew's General Strain Theory is when there is more of a focus on why the criminal behavior is happening and what negative experiences is causing that criminal behavior. This theory stems from three key pieces that builds its foundation and those are: Strain is the result of failure to achieve valued goals, stress is the result of removing positive stimuli from that individual, and strain is the result of negative stimuli from another. Social Disorganization Theory Social Disorganization Theory is a theory that is based on their traditional values taken away and was placed with negative activity and criminal behavior and criminal ideas. In this theory you will see how social bonding and family values contribute to criminal behavior and ideas. Differential Association Theory Differential Association Theory is a theory that breaks down children and how they are being exposed to the criminal behavior around them. This causes them to act on that behavior they are witnessing. Criminal behavior is learned and taught. When you have a criminal lifestyle and raised in one then that’s all you know because its being taught by those around us. Culture Conflict Theory Culture Conflict Theory this theory has been very useful in society and has come to be the new normal type of theory used. In this theory you learn that different people have different types of views and opinions and that’s ok. However, in different cultures its not ok and it can be very difficult to understand the views of others which is forbidden in some cultural groups.
In response to strain theory, what is one example of a policy or program that was created to reduce crime? The Perry Preschool Project How does the program or policy you’ve chosen attempt to reduce crime? The Perry Preschool Project was established as a research study to determine if access to high quality education would have a positive impact on preschool children and the communities, they live in. They studied them up to the age of 40 and there was some positive impact from this study such as fewer teenage pregnancies, was more likely to graduate high school, was more likely to hold a job, committed fewer crimes, and owned their own home and car. (ThePerryPreschoolProject,2022). In response to cultural deviance theory, what is one example of a policy or program that was created to reduce crime? Job Corps was a program that was created to help reduce crime. How does the program or policy you’ve chosen attempt to reduce crime? Job Corps program helps reduce crime by helping those that have a criminal background and helping them establish employment by offering them a second chance to prosper in society. They get to learn all kinds of skills that will help them become successful in the workplace and maintain employment instead of having to result to criminal behavior. References
