Culture Question 1. What is your group’s history related to prejudice and discrimination? In America, levels of prejudice and racism against black people have always existed at high levels. Although other groups are also discriminated against, black men and women have the highest mortality rates when it comes to these offenses. What are the legal, political, and economic challenges facing this group? There are many challenges facing African Americans in the U.S today. The most notable ones being how many black men are imprisoned on the daily, for crimes that a white person would normally be released for. The education system in typical black communities is also significantly lower than those of white communities, making it harder for African Americans to get the opportunity to go to college. What are historical and current forms of individual and institutionalized discrimination facing this group? Its no secret that the black community has faced its history with discrimination. For example, the Jim Crow laws in the 60’s that segregated white and colored people, leaving the colored people with worse versions of the items white people had, such as bathrooms, restaurants, bus seats, and water fountains. 2. If applicable, what is your group’s immigration experience? One in ten black people in American are immigrants, and the number of black immigrations to the states has gone up 60% since 2019. Jamaica and Haiti have the highest number of black immigrants to the U.S. As for the African American’s who were already in America, many of their ancestors came to America after they were sent here for slavery purposes. What are levels of assimilation? Like other groups in America, when black immigrants from other countries come to the states, and establish their roots, many loose sights of where they came from. Many immigrants being to forget their native language, they forget their roots and their heritage.
What are immigration trends over time? More than half of black immigrants came to America in the year 2000, over a quarter came between 2001 and 2009, and about one third came in 2019. 3. What are your group’s health outcomes? How has prejudice and racism affected your group’s health? Thanks to the affordable care act, more than 20 million African Americans who once did not have access to health insurance are now able to afford care for themselves and their families. However, the black community continues to be the group with the highest level of being uninsured. What is your group’s access to medical care and medical insurance? African Americans have had more access to medical care through the years with the AAC, or through their employers. Nevertheless, for those who do not qualify for affordable healthcare, many black people must pay out of pocket. This leads to 20% of a person of colors paycheck to be used toward healthcare insurance. What are major illnesses affecting your group? Black Americans are the most likely to be affected by diabetes, sickle cell amenia, cancer and heart disease compared to their white counterparts. What are the leading causes of death? Leading cause of death is heart disease, followed by cancer, and then followed by homicide. 4. What are best practices for health care practitioners who engage with this group? The black community is the highest minority group to be frequently misdiagnosed due to discrimination and racism. Its important to treat everyone fairly and listen to your patients concerns. It’s important to educate oneself with the struggles that the African American community faces and to be open when speaking about these topics. Be sure to be sensitive, and try to avoid cultural bias when speaking to a patient, although it might come up on their end.
