HOW CAN WE HELP NAJEEB Roger Montez Master of Social Work (MSW), Walden University SOCW-6210-10 Human Behavior -Soc Env II Spring 2023 Dr. Aileen McCabe-Maucher May 3, 2023
HOW CAN WE HELP NAJEEB Talking to Nejeeb for the first time, we would need to learn who he is and what is important to him. Once Najeeb identified that his religion is essential to him and that he cannot do his daily prayers and get to the mosque due to his medical illness, this would be a significant point that I would focus on for Najeeb. "Utilizing the concepts of spirituality and/or religion often helps to make meaning of the struggles clients may be facing." (Rich & Darrell, 2017). Focusing on Najeeb's religion will allow him to continue to fight for and remind him of a reason for improving his life. When working with Najeeb knowing his religion is important to him, I would need to be sensitive towards that to make sure I do not build a barrier between our rapport. As a social worker, having a neutral attitude will allow you and your client not to judge each other and be able to listen and acknowledge what the other person is going through. Having an open mind and not placing judgment on our clients will allow us to give them one hundred percent and give them the best care we can. Using our social worker code of ethics, we will be utilizing the Dignity and Worth of the Person, "Social workers treat each person in a caring and respectful fashion, mindful of individual differences and cultural and ethnic diversity" (NASW, 2021) To help Najeeb, I would focus on what is important to him, including his family, his religion, and his community. Since his wife died and he sold his newsstand, Najeeb seems to be isolating himself and not interacting with others outside his small circle. Getting Najeeb back into his religion, I will help locate ways to get Najeeb to the mosque. To help Najeeb with the prayer, we can find a peer to attend prayer with Najeeb to assist Najeeb in getting up and down for his prayers. For the last part of Najeeb's treatment plan, focus on the family to allow him to
get back to interacting with his family because having the ones you love around you will improve the quality of life you are living. It will also help remind him of what he has to fight for and a reason to continue. Having a clientele that you have different views is a given. We as social workers need to have open minds and hearts when working with our clients to ensure we are unbiased and give all our clients the Dignity and Worth of the Person we are serving.
