Assignment Content 1. 8.2 Assignment (Due By 11:59 p.m., Sunday CT) In the early 1830's, French aristocrat and sociologist Alexis de Tocqueville wrote the book series, Democracy in America . During his 10-month exploration of American society and our model of self- governance, the author noted two significant differences between American and European societies. He noted that, unlike European nations, American society, which never had a monarchy, aristocracy, or papacy, was free of the liberty-stifling influences that these institutions had on European societies. He further noted that Americans were quick to form "associations" or groups that would come together to solve problems. This week we examine those "associations" in the modern guise of social movements. This is a 2-part assignment. PART 1: Investigate a social movement that has occurred in your country. o List of Social Movements , Encyclopedia of Britannica o Follow the 2+1 Rule. PART 2: Interview someone who has participated in or witnessed the social movement you researched. REQUIRED RESOURCES Please read the following: o Mapping American Social Movements , University of Washington, 2015 o History of Social Movements, Building Movement Project, 2012 o Tips For Conducting Meaningful Interviews , Jeanette Abrahamsen, 2017 ASSIGNMENT INFORMATION PART 1: Respond to the following questions using the assigned course materials and the research that you have done on the movement.
o Describe the social movement you have chosen and the historical context of the movement. o In what ways has this social movement sought to help create a good society (as its members would see it)? o Connect and discuss your exploration of social movement to the assigned reading articles in the course by following the 2+1 Rule. PART 2: Interview someone who participated in or witnessed the social movement you researched. Write at least 4 of your own questions to ask your interviewee about their experience with the movement. Also, pick one of the following questions to ask in your interview: o How did the social movement affect individual and group rights? o How did your engagement with this movement impact your perspective on what it means to be an engaged citizen? o Explain what, if any, changes to society have been attributed to your chosen social movement. After collecting the information, explain the movement as you understand it and summarize what you learned from the interviewee. Include how their experience impacts your understanding of individual and group rights and the role of social movements in America. Include the full set of questions that you asked with your submission. Your assignment should be between 275 and 400 words and incorporate the 2+1 Rule: Remember to use a minimum of two assigned readings from the current week and one from any previous week. Always complete the Application Assignment before doing the Reflection Assignment.
