ASLS 266 Name: Lindsey Weaver Assignment: Chapter 5 Directions: Choose one of the “Learn More About It” items and answer the associated question prompt based on information/examples from the video . You can use your lecture notes and textbook to provide supplementary information. For the outline supporting details, jot down ideas. These should not be complete sentences. Question Prompt: What does the infant’s response indicate about an infant’s expectations for social interaction? Outline : Topic Sentence: An infant’s response during social interactions shows that they have certain expectations for their caregivers and other communicative partners. Supporting Details: 1. Infants are extremely responsive to emotion and reactivity in world around them (which was not always common knowledge) 2. Still face experiment- non responsiveness leads to extreme distress 3. Recovery from still face 4. Additional situations like stranger shyness and happiness with playmate Concluding Sentence: The “Still Face Experiment” and other naturalistic observations indicate that infants have a wide variety of expectations for their partners during social situations. Final Paragraph : An infant’s response during social interactions show that they have certain expectations for their caregivers and other communicative partners. Dr. Edward Tronick in the “Still Face Experiment” (2009) discusses how people used to believe that infants could not participate in social interactions, which is very inaccurate according to modern research. Pence Turnbull and Justice (2017) indicate that newborns are able to attend to social partners and show preferences to infant-direct speech. By six months of age, infants are able to engage in joint attention. In the “Still Face Experiment,” the infant displays many attempts to engage the mother in joint
ASLS 266 attention. The mother becomes non-responsive to her baby, so the baby tries talking, smiling, pointing, and crying to get her attention. After the baby becomes extremely distressed by her failed attempts, the mother is able to reestablish communication with the child. The infant was able to recover from this scenario; although, not all children are given the opportunity to do so. This shows an infants’ sensitivity towards others around them, just like being shy around an unknown person and being happy when they see a familiar playmate (Pence Turnbull & Justice, 2017). The “Still Face Experiment” and other naturalistic observations indicate that infants have a wide variety of expectations for their partners during social situations. References Pence Turnbull, K.
