Action Research Proposal Rachel Bassingthwaite American College of Education January 14th, 2024
There is many problems in the field of education. All of the many problems are large and systemic making it hard to make change. Changes need to happen though as teachers leave the profession in droves (Walker, 2021) and report the highest rates of burnout of any profession (Marken & Agrawal, 2022). Teaching is a noble profession that is vital for all other professions, but resources and respect are severely lacking. When teachers aren’t supported that means our students aren’t supported and what does that mean for the future (Madigan & Kim, 2021) . Change is necessary and change is needs to happen soon. One of the major affects of the systemic problems in the field of education is the high rates of teacher burnout (Walker, 2021). There are several things that lead to this burnout: lack of respect for teachers time, not taking teachers input, and a lack of supports for mental and physical health (Marken & Agrawal, 2022). Problem Statement The problem is that educators are burning out. Educations have the highest rates of burnout of any profession in the United States of America and the gap is widening (Marken & Agrawal, 2022). This contributes to teacher shortages, teachers being gone from work, and teachers not performing at their best which in turn impacts the students they are educating (Madigan & Kim, 2021). Teacher burnout effects approximately 45 percent of teacher always or most of the time meaning they are not performing at their best for their students a lot of the time (Marken & Agrawal, 2022). Purpose of the Study The purpose is for school leaders to make substantive changes to prevent teacher burnout (Walker, 2021). School leaders need to reduce the stress on teachers by respecting them and the
work they do. This respect can be shown by taking things of their plate and respecting their time (Walker, 2021). School leaders need to actively ask for, listen to, and consider teachers input making them feel both supported and heard while being treated as the professional experts they are (Walker, 2021). Lastly, school leaders need to support teachers in their mental and psysical well being (Walker, 2021). Research Questions When looking at the burnout rates for teachers some of the reasons seem obvious the solutions on the other hand are not as obvious. The following questions will guide an exploration of the literature and the action research study: Will more preparation time improve teacher burnout rates? What ways can school leaders get and use teacher input to improve teacher burnout rates? How will schools be able to implement mental and physical health to imporve burnout rates? Teachers are burning out at high rates and it affects the profession as whole with teachers leaving the classroom, missing work, and it impacts students learning. There are several things school leaders can do to help with teacher burnout: respect their time, take their input, and provide supports for mental and physical health.
