From the discussion what have you learned about community Counseling, prevention, outreach, and advocacy? From the readings that were assigned on domestic abuse, sexual abuse and incest, and bipolar and depression. I found each to be an interesting read and hit close to home for me. I believe Christian leaders and counselors need to be extremely careful about how they handle those situations. If not handled properly the victim can possibly turn away from God altogether. They must make sure that their questions don’t come off as victim-blaming. I have met women who are currently experiencing issues from trauma that occurred over 20 years ago. Regarding advocacy, I have learned more about different ways to advocate for the changes I would like to see in the community. Mainly with legal and legislative ways to advocate. When I was an investigator for Child Protective Services here in Jonesboro, one of the rules I wished the courts would change was how the judges could decide if all children were removed or just the one that the parent abused. I never understood an allegation was found true against the parent for one why not remove all. It would break my heart, maybe just fear of it happening to one of the other children. A couple of years ago Arkansas legal system decided to start removing all children after infant death occurred in a home with a mother who had already lost rights to one of her children. Prevention-based programs are needed. I believe it is good to be proactive. I have been employed with a prevention-based program for juvenile delinquents. While serving as a case manager one of my responsibilities was to facilitate group sessions. To get the youth involved I had to learn things that they enjoyed and what was popular at the time. By doing this I was able to create activities to get them to open up more about the behaviors that led them there. When they realized that I cared about what was best for them they tried working the program and did well. The problem would be the transition back into the community for many of the children. There are aftercare/outreach programs for them, but they are pretty much like a visit with their juvenile probation officers. As a counselor, I will find ways to advocate for change if it will better assist clients. I would be sure to bring awareness to the matter through news, and other media outlets. I will complete the necessary steps needed to see that change happens. There is a considerable amount of work to be done to assist the vulnerable populations in the community. Question from ppt: What are examples of vulnerable populations? Vulnerable populations examples are the minorities, lower-income families, the homeless, chronic mental health issues, addicts, and other economic
disadvantage populations. In my community, the homeless would be the most vulnerable as it relates to being able to receive physical and mental health care. The homeless have limited resources.
