2                                                    Social and Emotional Learning The evidence-based teaching method that I chose to learn more about for this reflection is Social and Emotional Learning. The process by which people pick up and put into practice the knowledge, attitudes, and abilities essential for understanding and managing emotions, create and meet positive goals, feel, and act compassionate toward others, create, and maintain healthy relationships, and make good choices is known as social and emotional learning. The idea of social and emotional learning has a history in many kinds of educational and psychological theories. Several people have contributed to its growth over time. The ideas of SEL are growing fields that have been influenced by the work of many organizations, experts, and teachers. The "invention" of SEL cannot be assigned to a single person or to a certain moment in time. Establishing a welcoming and inclusive environment that supports the growth of students' emotional and social abilities is a key component of implementing social and emotional learning in the classroom. During my research, I came across APA PsycNet, an interesting website. In one of their articles, "Systemic social and emotional learning: Promoting educational success for all preschool to high school students," it is stated that “Promoting social and emotional competencies—including the abilities to understand and manage emotions, achieve positive goals, show caring and concern for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions—are important for success at school and in life”(Mahoney, J. L., Weissberg, R. P., Greenberg, M. T.). First, by modeling positive social and emotional behaviors, teachers can act as role models for their students. This involves being empathetic, controlling emotions well, and finding positive solutions to disagreements. Second, to build unity and encourage open communication, teachers should hold a quick "morning meeting" at the beginning of the school day where students can talk about their feelings and ideas. Lastly,
3 educators could work together to create and keep classroom rules and that foster a respectful and upbeat setting for learning. Together with the students, this includes talking about and establishing standards for behavior. According to National University, “Social and emotional learning aims to help students better understand their thoughts and emotions, to become more self-aware, and to develop more empathy for others within their community and the world around them.” This means that teachers are pushing students to have a greater understanding of their own identities, beliefs, and the ways in which their thoughts and feelings shape their actions. This aligns perfectly with my own teaching style, which puts equal importance on students' general wellbeing and personal development as well as their academic performance. Furthermore, the focus on helping students in recognizing their ideas and feelings shows an effort to improving self-awareness. My approach to teaching, which is in line with social and emotional learning, places a high value on assignments that ask students to consider their own thoughts, feelings, and personal development. Emotional competence grows by considering others' feelings and thinking back on one's own experiences. Students develop the capability to identify and control their emotions, which is crucial for making wise decisions and fostering positive interpersonal interactions. When implementing social and emotional learning in a K–12 setting, teachers must include techniques and activities that support students in growing in self-awareness, interpersonal communication, and emotional control. My first encounter, to my recollection, with a social and emotional teaching method was my fifth-grade teacher. She is someone I have always remembered from elementary school. She was so comforting and understanding. She had a "Morning meeting" every morning where we would talk about any thoughts, feelings, or experiences we had. She created such a secure environment for us students that we were free to

4 talk about anything and it never had to be about anything specific. Establishing a classroom atmosphere that is both emotionally and supportive is beneficial to students' general well-being and academic achievement. This semester, I also gained experience in my field at Radnor Middle School. I observe in sixth-grade classes with pull-out and push-in systems. My teacher that I am observing uses a great method to incorporate social and emotional learning in the classroom. She posts a QR code on the board for the children to scan with their phones every morning once they get settled into their seats. In addition, if they don't have a phone, she uploads a link to their class platform so they may access it from their computer. Students in the sixth grade are transitioning into middle childhood stages, which is a strange and unfamiliar stage in which they must adjust to changes and new surroundings. Some students might not feel comfortable expressing their feelings or ideas in front of the class, they can write about how they are feeling and discuss their day, as well as their likes and dislikes, favorite music, etc., on this google form. There are many ways in which I can incorporate social and emotional learning into my future teaching practices. First, through planned lessons or activities, I can teach social and emotional development skills including self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness, interpersonal skills, and responsible decision-making. In order to encourage students to feel comfortable discussing their thoughts and emotions, I can also provide a warm and accepting environment in the classroom. As basic principles, I emphasize compassion, empathy, and respect. Finally, I could implement activities that promote positive peer relationships. Teamwork, team-building activities, and group projects all foster unity and interpersonal skills. Teachers can establish an accepting and inspiring learning environment that provides the emotional and intellectual needs of their students by including these methods into their teaching style.
