[Last Name] 1 Caitlin Guevara Professor Brasel EEC 4661 Sept. 13, 2023 Learning Log #2 Case Study – Outside food being brought into the center and not properly being checked for allergens. The case study made me connect this to the elementary school I went to. At the elementary school I went to, we used to be able to bring snacks and treats to school to share with the class on birthdays and other holidays, but as time went on, we were not allowed to bring snacks anymore because of possible allergens that students may have. Instead of bringing snacks or treats, the teacher would let us watch a movie or have a “fun day” instead of needing snacks or treats to celebrate. What would be the best approach to include all children in celebrations if they have different religious or cultural beliefs? Does involving the families and touching base with the parents to ask what is or is not appropriate for the child to be involved in one of the best possible routes? “Is taking a child to the library instead of being involved in the activities with the other children because it goes against their religious or cultural beliefs, or if they have special needs fair to the child?” - I think this approach may not to be fair to the child because the child may see this approach as a punishment instead of their opportunity to have fun with their classmates. This also becomes an ethical or
[Last Name] 2 moral dilemma because we want to treat all the children equally instead of unintentionally excluding them. Child Life Specialists are still considered educators even though it is not in their official title (I didn’t know this!). So, we must know DAP and effectively apply them. This makes me excited to continue my degree track because I enjoy teaching and educating others! “Attend Family Events”— This is an important way to engage with the children and families outside of the educational setting because it shows the family and the student that the teacher cares deeply about the child. Showing up for students in any way possible is one of the best things an educator can do. It reminds me of a few teachers I had in middle school and high school. They did what they could for us as students and showed how much they genuinely cared for us. These teachers were so memorable for me because of this, it made me feel connected to them inside and outside the classroom.
