Katelyn Emshoff READ 3383 3384 Part 4: Reflection Reflection on Literacy Assessment and Instruction During my time in the field, I was able to use many different assessments to see where students were in their development. This helped me out immensely by understanding where each student’s strengths and weaknesses were. This data helped me develop lesson plans for tutorial sessions that I taught to the students. When assessing student’s and then reviewing the data it was crazy to see how in one area the student did well in and in other areas you would think since the student did well in that area, they would do well in the other area since some areas are somewhat are related. It just shows how truly students’ development is not constant with each other. Each student is different. The way they learn, behave, and interact is all different. When assessing and using instructional strategies they must be differentiated accordingly to each student. Building a positive relationship with student will allow myself to fully understand them and know how to assess and teach them accordingly. Reflection on Teacher Growth   The areas that I believe that I have grown in the most would be interactive read- aloud, reading workshop, and guided reading. While in the field, I was able to teach each of these areas of literacy serval times. When conducting an interactive read-aloud, I was able to get a feel of how to interact with the students and ask the right questions throughout the text. An important skill that students should develop during interactive read-aloud is comprehension and prediction. Also, keeping the students engaged while having to stay focused in the text. I was able to teach a reading workshop lesson. This 1
Katelyn Emshoff READ 3383 3384 was a great experience. I was able to see the breakdown of reading workshop and how it is an effective instructional context. I am looking forward to teaching reading workshop more. Lastly, my mentor teacher gave me four guided reading groups to teach. She showed me the breakdown on how to makes her guided reading groups and determines which students are placed in what groups. Each group focused on different strategies to work on. I was able to teach each group something different. This was so great by allowing me to practice teaching each strategy. I am looking forward to growing more in these areas of literacy teaching. The areas that I believe that I feel that more professional development would be beneficial is writing workshop, and phonics/word study lesson. While in the field, I was able to teach each of these areas of literacy one time. Before teaching writing workshop, I watched my mentor teacher teach it multiple times. I saw the strategies she used so when it was my turn to teach, I tried to use what I learned during my teaching. When teaching the lesson, I was somewhat all over the place. I could tell the students could feel that from me and in result they were not engaged in the lesson. I need more professional development and more practice teaching writing workshop. I was not able to teach a phonics lesson, but I was able to watch my mentor teacher teach a lesson. Only being able to watch one lesson be taught and myself not being able to teach one I can tell that I will need more professional development before teaching a phonics lesson. I am looking forward to learning more about these areas of literacy teaching and practice teaching them. 2
