b. Summarize the key conclusions from each of the three tables. You want separate summary statements about each table. From table one, we can see that there is c. FOR ONE OF THE QUESTIONS YOU PRESENTED IN QUESTION 1a, provide a crosstabulation showing how opinions vary by the independent variable relevant to your topic. For example, gender differences are relevant if the topic is gender inequality or LGBTQ inequality; racial/ethnic differences are relevant if the topic is racial inequality; income or education differences are relevant if the topic is social class inequality. (You find the crosstabulation in iPoll by clicking the little box named “crosstabulations” on the left after you have done a search. Crosstabulations are NOT provided for all survey questions.) Make sure that your crosstabulation has a complete title and that the source of the data is listed at the bottom of the table. NOTE: Crosstabulation titles include the word “by” in the What section of the title as in “Attitudes about Same-Sex Marriage by Gender.” The easiest way to download the crosstabulation is to click the button “Download as Excel” in the lower right and then paste in the space below. PUT YOUR ONE CROSSTABULATION HERE.
d. Summarize the key conclusions from the crosstabulation making sure that you compare the categories of your independent variable (for example, comparing men to women or high income people to low income people).
2. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VOTING POPULATION (those who vote) One section of Chapter 5 in your textbook focuses on Voting. Table 5.1 provides you with information on voting rates for various groups of citizens 18 and older. Another way to look at voting is to compare the “citizen voting-age population” (those eligible to vote) to the voting population (those who voted). Then, you can see which groups are over- or underrepresented. For example, if 14% of the citizen voting-age population are “purple,” but 41% of those who actually voted are “purple,” then “purple people” are overrepresented in the voting population—and perhaps their point of view will be more likely to be heard.) Go to the Census Bureau’s most recent report on who voted in the 2020 Presidential Election. Then, scroll to Table 2. https://www.census.gov/content/dam/Census/library/publications/2022/demo/p20-585.pdf a. Focusing on Social Class (income or education), Race and Hispanic Origin, or Gender, discuss the extent to which the voting population (those who voted) is similar to or different from the “citizen voting-age population.” Which groups are over-represented in the voting population and which groups are under-represented? Remember to stick with your general topic—social class, racial/ethnic, gender, or LGBTQ inequality. b. Discuss the extent to which the age of the voting population (those who voted) is similar to or different from the age of “citizen voting-age population.” (Which age groups are over- represented in the voting population and which groups are under-represented?)

3. SOCIAL MOVEMENTS ON YOUR TOPIC DESIGNED TO REDUCE INEQUALITY Social movements for social change are discussed in Chapter 14 of your textbook. Continue to focus on your general topic . So for this question, focus on the labor movement, the movement for racial/ethnic equality, the feminist movement, or the movement for gay rights. You have a lot of choice here : For example, you could focus on a general movement for racial equality or on specific movements for Hispanic equality or for farm workers rights (many of whom are Hispanic migrants) or for the legal status of Dreamers (children brought to the United States by their parents who are not currently citizens). Using material from your textbook (Chapter 14, in particular) or other sources (which you need to cite below), briefly discuss three events that you see as significant in the move toward greater equality. Include when each took place (the year is enough). ( 1) (2) (3) REFERENCES. If you only use the textbook, you just need to say “Textbook, Chapter 14.” It you use the videos or other sources, include the citation.
4. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VERY RICH In Blackboard, go to the link to Library on the left. (You can also go directly to this page by clicking here: http://libguides.cmich.edu/soc302 .) Look for the Forbes 400 (richest Americans) on the right panel. a. Take a systematic sample with a random start from these 400 people. You do this by finding a random number between 1 and 10. That is your first member of the sample, then count down 40 and down 40 again and down 40 again until you have 10 people. Describe these 10 rich Americans in terms of wealth, gender, race, age, educational level (e.g., high school graduate, college graduate, graduate degree), prestige of university attended, and Forbes self-made score (from 1-10). A table might help you summarize this information, but a table is not necessary. For example: Name Wealth Gender Race Age Educational Level Prestige of university Self- made Score Note the definition of “self-made scores” that you find by clicking on the link “self made score” associated with the profile of any of the 10 rich Americans. Note the 12 high prestige university that Thomas Dye discusses. They are: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, Stanford, Chicago, University of California-Berkeley, Johns Hopkins, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cornell, and Northwestern. b. Given what you have found, discuss the extent to which there are social factors leads to unity among the “corporate rich?”
5. WHICH MODEL IS MOST SUPPORTED BY EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE ? In what ways are the data you present in Questions 1 through 4 consistent or not consistent with the pluralist, the elitist, and the ruling class models discussed in Chapter 5? In answering, you can combine the elitist and ruling class models because they have a great deal in common with each other and are very different from the pluralist model. Be specific and detailed in your response, making sure that you draw on empirical evidence and making sure that you are clear about the link between the evidence you present and the model (that the evidence either supports or rejects).. Due by the end of the day on Sunday, November 19 50 points
