CLAS 2109 The Self and Society Reading Worksheet 4 – Kwame Anthony Appiah, “Autonomy and Its Critics” 1. Why does the character Stepan Arkadyich (in Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina) attract the concern and criticism of those whom Appiah calls “strong autonomists' '? The character Stepan Arkadyich attracts the concern and the criticism of those whom Appiah calls “Strong autonomists' ' due to the lack of commitment to the aspects of autonomy. “Strong autonomists” are conceived that there is a significance of having a community or society that is able to make their own choices based on their beliefs and values. 2. According to Appiah, what is one of the arguments (in your own words) made by those who claim that the value of autonomy is at odds with that of diversity? I believe that one of the arguments that is being stated is regarding the autonomy of having an impact on the characteristics of a society, on both social and cultural norms, and many more ideals. It talked about how engaging in autonomy will remove the significant part of diversity and maintain a normal lifestyle . Individuals want to seek self government and make cultural differences disappear. 3. Why does Appiah assert that “we are all Stepan” (48-49)? What point is Appiah making here?
Appiah asserts that “we are all Stepan” to show the obstacles that are being faced by many individuals in keeping a steady and obligated autonomy. By comparing us to “Stepan”, Appiah refers to the difficulties of finding yourself, while searching for personal desires and trying to live up to social expectations. 4. What does Appiah mean, in his discussion of Kant’s ‘two standpoints,’ where he says that “[w]e have to act as if freedom is possible even though we can’t provide any theoretical justification for it” (56)? In appiah's discussion of Kant's two standpoints, he explains that no matter if there's concrete evidence to rusty Treedom, we should continue to advocate for liberty while trying to maintain and uphold in our actions and decisions made that can impact the society as a whole. He believes that being self conscious about freedom is what matters more and being able to act in a way that benefits with certain beliefs even when there's no reliable justification
5. Why does Appiah suggest that “the incoherence of our different theoretical practices” may be a good thing (60)? What does he mean? Appiah suggests that the incoherence of our different theoretical practices may be a "good thing" as if it creates different views on perspectives and approaches while various theoretical practices do not go hand and hand with each other but it creates a list of other interpretations and viewpoints of the world. Having seen a diverse society can lead to new discoveries and insights on complex issues in a set ared.
