Week 5 What are some of the "single stories" we have in our culture about LGBTQIA+ people in our culture? How did you learn these stories? The first single tory that comes to mind is that people can become gay, therefore they have the choice to be straight or can be “fixed” through therapy or conversion programs. Or as this week reading explains, some people still believe that homosexuality is a sickness and can be cured ( Haefele-Thomas & Combs, 2019) . I heard this story through church members and movies such as boy erased which showcases the experience of Garrard Conley as he went trough conversion therapy for being the gay son of Baptist parents. Another single story is that people in the LBTQIA+ community is that they only have 1coming out day. All movies or stories that I’ve heard about LGBTQIA+ people are narrowed down to the one day they decided to come out. However non heterosexual people have to come out over and over again throughout their lives and as they meet new people or go through different life experiences. ( Tatum, 2015). Consider the last 2-3 movies or TV shows you have watched. How many LGBTQIA+ characters were represented in them? How were these characters portrayed compared to straight characters? The last two shows that I have watched are The Fall of the House of Usher and Modern Family. In the fall of The House of Usher, there were three LGBTQIA+ characters. 1 was gay and 2 were bisexual. They all fell under the stereotype of having lavish lifestyles but held the same power as their straight counterparts. They also did not have flamboyant styles nor showcase stereotypical mannerisms so when standing next to straight characters the differences could not be pinpointed. On the other hand, Modern Family has 2 gay men and they fit under many of the common stereotypes. Cam is often used as comedic relief and he is flamboyant which is not like the other straight characters, but his style is somewhat matched to Gloria who is a very stereotypical depiction of a Latina woman, colorful, emotional, and loud. If you were a television or movie executive or director, how could you improve diversity in your industry? Why might this be important? It is important to improve diversity in the entertainment industry because it reflects how diverse our world is and it allows all audiences to see themselves represented, which helps people feel included. To improve diversity in the industry I would ensure that casting covers all groups including underrepresented groups. Blind auditions and casting can help remove bias. I would also encourage diverse writing as that is where it all begins. By focusing on background stories or experiences of different groups and cultures diversity can increase. Lastly, I would also encourage audience engagement as feedback can help have a more authentic representation. Haefele-Thomas, A. & Combs, T.
