1. How does your city’s homicide trend since 2010 compare with national homicide rates over time? Higher, lower, convergent, divergent? Write this up in a short paragraph and snip out a chart of what is happening in your city from 1960-2020. The homicide trend in Rochester appears to be relatively stable with intermittent fluctuations. From 2010 to 2012 and 2017 to 2020, the city witnessed consistent homicide rates, experiencing only slight increases in 2013 and 2016. However, when compared to the national homicide rate, Rochester's trend displays some divergence. Both rates remained steady from 2010 to 2014, but the national rate experienced a significant uptick from 2015 to 2016 and again from 2019 to 2020. This indicates a divergent pattern between the city's homicide rates and the national average, with Rochester's rates showing more stability over the observed period.
2. What happened to homicide (and, if available, gun violence generally) in your city recently (2021 and 2022)? Please tell me how you found out – how confident are you in the numbers you unearthed? Newspaper of record? Police official data? Other source? In 2021 Rochester experienced a sudden spike in homicide reported by FBI crime data explorer. I am 100% confident in the numbers I gathered because it is on the FBI website, and I believe their data is accurate. Sources: https://cde.ucr.cjis.gov/LATEST/webapp/#/pages/explorer/crime/shr 3. Discuss the pattern of homicide you find since 2018. Why do you think it happened? Does the news suggest any “causal” mechanisms for the homicide change (if there was one?). How does this compare to the national picture of homicides (and shootings) that were observed in 2020? Homicide rates exhibited a distinctive pattern in recent years. Following a notable decrease in 2017, there was a subsequent upward trend starting in 2018, which continued through 2020, marking the highest homicide rates observed since 2007. I think this happened due to covid and protests happening across the country. The news does not suggest casual mechanisms for the homicide change from what I have researched. In 2020, the United States experienced a significant increase in homicides and shootings across many cities and regions. This rise in violent crime occurred against the backdrop of a tumultuous year marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, widespread protests, police brutality and racial injustice, economic disruptions, and political polarization. What theory/theories from Chapter 3 help you frame 2020’s homicide changes?
In considering the changes in homicide rates in 2020, theories like Routine Activities Theory, Strain Theory, and Conflict Theory, all found in Chapter 3, can be valuable. Alongside Social Disorganization Theory, they help us understand how disruptions in daily life, economic stress, and social conflicts during the pandemic might have contributed to the rise in homicides. These theories offer insights into the factors behind the changes observed in 2020.
