I watched the video Diagnosis: Parenting a Child with a Disability. In this video they did not discuss any services they may have used for their children. The mothers did talk about having a support system of other families with children who have disabilities that would understand what they are going through. In Southern California where I live, we have a non-profit organization called Tri-Counties Regional Center. My son is diagnosed on the spectrum so I can tell you from experience the positive and negative challenges that come with raising a child with special needs. Some of the positives are we celebrate all milestones no matter how small, being fully involved in all aspects of your child’s life, and learning how to look at life through your child’s eyes. Some of the negatives are feeling like you are always being judged by other parents, always have to advocate for your child, and feeling very alone in your journey. Once your child is diagnosed and you start to go through many different emotions you feel very confused where to go next. I remember thinking someone needs to let people know when their child is recently diagnosed where to find resources and what services are available to them. My son has a case manager who we talk to once a year to just check in on progress. On multiple occasions I did my own research and found out my son was eligible for resources and had to reach out to his case manager for information to obtain the resources. I feel this is a backwards system. Families are all ready overwhelmed with trying to navigate this new diagnosis they need someone to help them realize the diagnosis doesn’t change the child just helps them try to make their child’s life easier. I would love to be an advocate for a newly diagnosed family to help them navigate what resources are available to the family.
