Analysis and Recommendations for Algonquin Provincial Park 2 Analysis and Recommendations for Algonquin Provincial Park Introduction The case study addresses and frames the wicked problem of the logging in Algonquin Park, Ontario’s oldest Provincial Park, located in central Ontario. The controversial issue is the logging of 45% of the park because stakeholders say, “if the Park is treated the same as areas outside its boundaries, then the boundaries are meaningless” (Algonquin Eco Watch, 2010). By analyzing the issues and the interests/values of the stakeholders, the most beneficial course of action will be recommended. Analysis The three main issues, according to the case study are: the multiple stakeholders involved and their opposing values, the difficulty in finding a balance between protecting the forest and benefiting from the economic benefits it provides, and finally that there is scientific evidence that logging in diverse forests can be as beneficial to the environment as they are detrimental (Sayna). The stakeholders with controversial views on the issue are: government agencies such as the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and Ottawa Parks Board, officials like the environmental commissioner, logging companies and their employees, Non-Profit organizations, the community and the Algonquin Park itself. Conclusion
