1 CJ 675 Data Driven Decisions Short Paper 2-2 Prof. Ryan Wentworth March 8, 2024 Sara Brandt
2 Pointing out what causes the rising crime rates is something that is very hard to do because every city can have rising crime rates and drops in crime rates. Every situation and city is completely different. When it comes to the city in Fargo in North Dakota they have seen crime rates rise in the last year. The question that remains is there some reason that the crime rates have rose in certain crimes and that other crime rates have dropped down. The police department is struggling and needs a research method to help figure out was to lower the crime rates in their city. With any case they must look at the bug factors that would be linked to the higher crime rates and that could start with the population increase. When there are more people in a city the crime rates are known to go higher As stated in the reading “Police say some of the reasons for the increase can include more people living in the city, along with increased drug and mental health problems” ( Schroeer, 2016). Another contributing factor can be the lack of police officers in the city of Fargo. They have a below national average of police officers and they say that they will get more but that is a work in progress. They have to work it somewhere in the budget because as of right now they don’t have any more room for more officers in the budget. By collection of data and research the Fargo police department can come up with solutions to their rise in crime rates. The research method that comes to my mind is sampling method which is the process of selecting a sample population from a target population. If they get a great deal of sampling back then they can just multiply that to get a bigger number for the population and work with what they have. This method will also help the Fargo police department be able to break things down criminal wise in different categories, as in race, sex, religion, or even gang related crimes. If they see a pattern in people who have recently moved
3 there or people who have lived there for a long time either way will help them get a better understanding by sampling. The other research method that they could use is surveys as long as residents are filling them out. Even if they get a quarter of the surveys back they can multiple it and go from there. On the surveys at least they can ask the citizens what they think they can do to help lower crime rates or even citizens who have committed a crime in the past what they think would help lower crime rates. By doing the surveys in the communities that have seen the crimes they can give a firsthand experience answer to the police and this might help lead them to a better answer in their community. Another great question would be asking the citizens if they think that the lack of police in the area is a contributing factor in the increase in crimes. This might in fact help get the city to find a way to budget more money in for the police. The way I think that Fargo Police Department can make their best decision possible would be by having one the community input and two increases the presence of the police officers. By having the police around more that makes people in the community see that they are not only interacting with the community but they are going to help to do their part more also. This can also lower the rate of police violence in general and make the crime rates continue to go down. It was stated that the budget would be a problem but there are government agencies and help out there to help with that. When looking at ways to lower crime rates, using research methods is the best and most crime rate increases come from certain reasons but some of them aren’t as obvious as others. The two reasons that the crime rates in Fargo have increased could most likely be from the increase of people moving there or from the small amount of law enforcement there. By them having
