Reflection: Society IDS-400 Professor Nicole Ray Michael Smith April 8, 2023
Introduction: Recap of Topic Policing in America is a topic which has recently polarized society and caused action by those the police are supposed to serve and protect. The role of diversity in society is defined as “every culture, every nationality, every single person sees the world in a different way. Similarly, every culture, nationality, and person have a different knowledge, perspectives, and point of view” ( Why is Diversity So Important . (n.d.). I have friends who have a very different view of law enforcement than myself. Some of these friends had negative interactions and others did nothing wrong but had the police taking their parent or parents away and the friends they had the neighborhood experienced the same thing, thus effecting the environment they grew up in while leaving a negative experience in their mind about police. Different Lens One way in which your analysis might have been different if you had used one of the other general education lenses to analyze your topic is looking through the lens of social science instead of historical lens. With the social science lens, I could put myself in another’s shoes when talking about diversity. Policing in America the lens I know is that of a Native American with law enforcement experience means my interactions are very different than someone who grew up mistrusting the police and living in an environment where the police are taking people away or targeting where they live due to high crime rates or other factors such as community perception. The historical lens can show the evolution of policing in America as well as historical gaps which may or may not exist to this day.
Critical Analysis Critical analysis does diversity value to interactions with people in a variety of contexts. I have shown in previous papers as well as in this paper my interactions with law enforcement as well as how those interactions could be different than other segments of society. What happens though when the police get it wrong in Farmington, New Mexico the police where called to a domestic call and went to the house and the male answering the door had a gun. The police took a tactical position which lead to the male being shot and killed. As shots rang out his wife didn’t know it was the police and returned fired causing additional shots into the house. After the male was killed the police realized they responded to call and went to the wrong location which they were supposed to respond to (Campbell, P. A. R. E. (2023, April 7). Earlier in the same week the FBI and US Army tactical response team had a training exercise at hotel which resulted in the wrong person being detailed for the exercise in their hotel room when the rooms were mixed up (Campbell, P. A. R. E. (2023, April 7). It is always important to double check vital information especially during intense high adrenaline runs where critical errors should not occur. Reflection back in time with law enforcement many factors happen during calls and the officer has to make critical decisions in split second, while officers are human and mistakes happen all to often miscommunication or a missed attention to detail causes a snowball effect which we can analyze after the fact through bodycam, notes, and interviews with those involved. Sometimes we get it right and other times we leave asking more questions than getting answers.

Diversity in Society This course has helped me in understanding the role of diversity in society by understanding a coin has two sides, however diversity has many sides and views beyond the heads and tails of a coin. Through the general lens diversity can help strengthen the argument while also showing the whole picture of the topic. In this course I have learned there is no clear answer nor is there a correct answer like in math when there can only be one correct answer to a problem. I can have a better understanding of concepts such as bias, intersectionality, culture, and identity contributes to your perceptions of diversity in society by accepting bias does exist that intersectionality is real, and culture plays a role into the identity of a group or the people that group influences. This could be true for society that grows up with negative police experiences or doesn’t fully understand the role police in society. Imagine growing up and every male or female in our household at some point is taken away in handcuffs and serves time in jail. I have experienced diversity growing up, yet once I went into the workplace, I saw it more and when I worked for a company that embraced diversity and DEI I grew more as I got to interact with other segments in society that I was not normally interacting with in my life. Then add this course and the material from it and I feel I am growing again looking at the different lens and trying to gain a 360 degree view of policing in America. My critical analysis skills will impact my approach for my paper by not trying to go down a perceived thought or take one side of the argument. Instead I intend to paint a picture and let the facts and statics back what history and society has stated about policing in America. The goal of this paper is not be negative, but show the gaps as well as celebrate the amazing job our officers do in the field every day.
