Introduction To Sociology – Spring 2024– 4:30-7:15 Chapter 4 Assignment: “Social Class, Inequality and Poverty” Mr. Hopkins, Instructor Write at least two paragraphs (5 sentences per paragraph) in your response to the questions below but also give a complete and thoughtful answer Social Stratification is a system in all societies in which people are divided or ranked according to their relative property, power and prestige. This creates inequality which exists in varying degrees in all societies. America’s stratification system is referred to as a “social class” system. The six social classes in Dennis Gilbert’s model of class structure are the capitalist class (1%), upper-middle class (14%), middle class (30%), working-class (30%), working poor (15%), and underclass (10%). Page 9 of the text. Sociologist Max Weber argued there are three components of social class: property (income/wealth), power (the ability to control others even over their objections), and occupational prestige (the degree in which people are held in high esteem because of their work/career). As you look at Gilbert’s model of social class and consider Weber’s model of social class, answer the following questions. 1. If you were forced to choose between Weber’s three components of social class, which component would you choose to have for the rest of your life: property, prestige, or power? Explain why? If I were forced to choose between Weber’s three components of social class, I would choose property for the rest of my life. I chose this because I believe money does bring happiness, and I know the saying but to me it truly does but only if I earned it myself and it wasn’t just given to me. Also, everything costs money, without money where would we be? There would be no roof over our heads and no food being digested. I also chose this because of my major, later down the line I would love to open my own hospital building.
2. Would you be able to obtain one or both of the other two components? Explain how? I think I would be able to obtain power. I believe this because I’m good at influencing people for the better. 3. In your opinion, which of Weber’s social class components most closely connects with Gilbert’s social class structure and why? In my opinion, “property” most closely connects with Gilbert’s social class structure. Gilbert’s social class consists of the upper middle class, the lower middle class, the working class, the working poor, and the underclass. I chose “property” because it relates to wealth.
