Verity Pobst Professor O’Connor EEC 1000 April 30, 2023 Family Involvement in the Classroom Parent involvement in the classroom is super important not only because it helps the teacher but because it helps the child significantly. Children with family involvement in school tend to have better behaviors and demonstrate better social skills. As far as the teachers go, the involvement builds a positive relationship between the two. What parents don’t know is that their involvement means so much not only for the teachers but for the children it means so much more. According to Annie E. Casey Foundation, “For decades, researchers have pointed to one key success factor that transcends nearly all others such as socioeconomic status, student background or the kind of school a student attends; parental involvement.” Whether you are a very busy parent or do not think that you have time to get involved there are different ways you can. There may be barriers that quite a few parents face that prohibit their involvement such as communication, lack of awareness in the classroom, and work conflicts that become a huge issue. For that
reason, there are many different other ways that can help with the involvement in the classroom. For instance, some parents could possibly help with homework and reading with their children. Another way is to attend school functions, including parent/teacher conferences. Adding learning into the household as a priority and getting them to go off a schedule as they do in the classroom. If able, volunteering in the classroom would help parents become involved in the education of their children. A simple and easy way to volunteer would be to just walk into the classroom occasionally, to just read a book, or even attend a field trip. Simply helping with homework can even contribute to involvement in the classroom. Even engaging in extracurricular activities can help improve their children's confidence. Schools can even help out with parents by educating them on the importance of the involvement they have. Encourage communication as much as possible to establish trust in which would help better the family involvement. Sending home an agenda that highlights what needs to be done or what the child needs help with. It may help to send a reading journal home with the child and require a signature upon completion. It is the simple things that would help with getting parents more involved. Sometimes, as mentioned above, there are hardships in the parent's lives which make it harder for them to participate in the classroom and it happens to the best of us. There are many ways in which can help out without having to go out of the
way. Family involvement is the most important for children as it can help the student achieve better which can lead to higher grades. It also helps the parents understand their child's emotional needs and intellectual needs better as well. Although it may seem as if all of these options are not you can fit in your agenda, you can communicate with your child’s teacher, and they would provide a much better way you can get involved without having to go out of the way. Getting involved is the most important thing that families can do as it is to help the children with better attitudes towards school which is super important in the education of children.
