Assignment 10 HDFS 225 Brooklyn Irwin November 30, 2023 Social development in Early Childhood Social development is very important in early childhood. This is not only something I think is very important but scientific evidence backs it up. Today we find that kids are less and less social. In this assignment I'm going to introduce one important concept and two important concepts from chapter ten. We will be taking a look at social learning theory, Social problem solving, and advances in peer sociability. Then at the end of each section I will add how these will apply when I work with you children. Social Learning Theory Social learning theory takes a deep dive into observation and imitation. Have you ever seen a child do something and you ask yourself “where did they learn that from '' and with reflection they learned it from you. For example, if a parent were to hold the door for an elderly at the grocery store and over time as the child grew up the child started to hold the door for others. This theory stuck out to me because it most definitely showed up in my life. I would say my mom is a very influential person in my life and as a child I was very observant of everything about her. This led to imitation of her, especially her actions. I think knowing much about this theory it is important to remember it as I am working with children who are easily influenced. With this I want to keep my mom in mind as she was the example I want my kids/students to have. Social Problem Solving Next we are looking into social problem solving. Even the best of friends will face conflict at times in their relationship. What I like about this concept is the preparedness. As working with
younger children this concept is growth of strategies to apply when there is conflict. It opens a space of growth and correction for students. When I work with young children this will be applying this by keeping my eyes open to their actions both educational and socially. I also think this is something we can teach our students as it is something they can carry with them. This could look many different ways. Here is a few examples I would use in my classroom: modeling(real-life examples or scenarios), Role playing( gets students more involved), or Storytelling( with it in with the curriculum you are teaching). Advances in Peer Sociability Lastly, we're going to turn our focus on peer relations. I think there is importance on this concept because this is another influential and some could say a determining factor in a child's development. I want to highlight that in the book there is a three step sequence that is important to social development. The sequence follows as: functional play, constructive play and make- believe play. When you are able to correctly know where your young child is, you can better learn how to help their social development. I think this is something I will be able to apply in my classroom. Being able to identify what stage my students are at based off of this will help me to guide them in their social development. When we can identify where a student is compared to him or her peers it can help to to know how to support them better. With that I think communication is an important factor as you help them to grow in social development. To conclude this three concept summary we looked at three important concepts that I think are important to a young child's social development. We first looked at Social learning theory where we learn about observation and imitation. Second we looked at social problem solving where we learned as teachers not only to look for educational problems but also social problems. Lastly we touched on advances in peer sociability. Here we learned that there is so much we can learn by just watching our students play.
