Running head: WEEK 5 REFLECTION 1 Week 5 Reflection Chamberlain University NR602: Primary Care of the Childbearing & Childrearing Family Practicum 2/11/2024 Week 5 Reflection
WEEK 5 REFLECTION 2 In my community, the Department of Social Services oversees child and adult abuse cases and reports in the state of South Carolina. They have a toll-free hotline that is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They attempt to keep the child safe in their own home but if they are unable to do so they will place the child in kinship or foster care ( Report , 2024). Kinship care helps keep children with family or someone the child knows. This is a good option for parents who may need temporary assistance in creating a safe home environment. This is the preferred placement for children. This type of care creates fewer environmental disturbances and lowers rates of mental and physical problems compared to children placed in foster care (Wu et al., 2020). As a healthcare provider, I am a mandated reporter by South Carolina law. This requires me to report abuse or neglect if I have suspicions or have been told there is possible neglect or abuse. I do not need to prove the abuse or neglect. If a mandated reporter fails to report neglect or abuse, they can be fined or imprisoned if convicted. To report, I would contact the Department of Social Services using their 24-hour hotline or local law enforcement. If the alleged abuser is not the child’s parent, guardian, or responsible adult, the law requires reporting to law enforcement ( Report , 2024). If I felt the child was in immediate danger, I would call 911. References
