Boaman1 Nicole Boaman 01/20/24 Week 2.1 Tolerance in Teaching Environment Assignment 1. I strongly agree I do not think of my students in terms of their race or ethnicity, I am color blind when it comes to my teaching. I feel like way because it does not matter what their race or ethnicity is, each student deserves the right to the same education. 2. I strongly agree that I should reward students who try hard, even if they are not doing well in school; building their self-esteem is important. Building student self-esteem and academic achievement is very important. If you do not reward students who try hard, he/she will stop trying. Also, not rewarding students who try, declines their self- esteem making he/she does not feel good enough or smart enough. 3. I neither agree nor disagree. I feel that yes, I will provide assignments that I know they can do but also, I would like to challenge my students within their limits. I could do this by doing an extra credit question, so it does not affect their grade. 4. I neither agree nor disagree. I first feel like the gap in achievement among students of different races is about poverty and race. But also, insufficient funding, lack of resources, and poor teacher training in low-income schools can contribute to the gap between lower-income and higher-income students. 5. I do agree that teachers should adapt their instructional practice to the distinctive cultures of African American, Latino, Asian, and Native American students. Teachers should be responsive to their students’ values, beliefs, and experiences will be more effective than those who are not.
Boaman2 6. I strongly agree that students of different races and ethnicities often have different learning styles and good teachers will match their instruction to these learning styles. Teachers should consider the learning styles of their students. We all prefer to learn in some ways more than others. 7. I strongly disagree, as a teacher we should call on students in class to make it fair to the other students. Also, as a teacher we need to make sure that the students do not feel embarrassed to speak in front of others. Some cultures, students learn that in their homes and communities about appropriate behavior which could discourage them from participating actively in class. As a teacher, yes, we should be sensitive to concerns among our students. 8. I neither agree nor disagree. Cooperative learning, students articulate their thoughts more freely and receive confirming and constructive feedback. The downside is that learning outcomes of collaborative learning depend on the quality of student’s discussions. 9. I strongly agree that students need to have a solid grasp of basic skills before they engage in complex learning tasks. This creates a basic level of understanding before completing the learning task. I agree with this, so the students do not go into the complex learning task completely confused. 10. I strongly agree that it is not fair to ask students who are struggling with English to take on challenging academic assignments. I believe that if students are doing challenging academic assignments, this is a set up for failure which can later result in poor self-esteem.
Boaman3 11. I disagree strongly that everyday lived experiences of my students take valuable time for teaching and learning. It is okay to find and use examples of historic and everyday lived experiences because that is also teaching students. 12. I strongly agree nor disagree that talking about race with my colleagues could open a can of worms. I agree that talking about race with colleagues could open a can of worms if my colleagues take what I was talking about the wrong way. It also could be a good idea to talk about race to better understand how we can better assist them with education. 13. I strongly disagree that my efforts to teach these students are being undermined. As a teacher, I would try to make my students value education. If students don’t do their homework, I will make extra time within my schedule to do homework with them or ask if I can go to their house and do homework with them.

Boaman4 Reflection I will use this self-assessment on my beliefs to maintain a tolerant and accepting learning environment for my students. As a teacher, you need to have a neutral mindset. To tolerate and accept a learning environment for students is to respect the differences within the classroom. I can respect the differences of my students by treating each of them fairly and acknowledging their unique needs. Also, to respect differences and promote a culture of tolerance and acceptance within the school community. Teachers should consider their classroom walls and even the layout. Rearranging the classroom layout periodically to help students build relationships with all their classmates. Teachers should provide a welcoming and nurturing environment but there is no such thing as a welcoming, nurturing environment when there is tolerance for bullying. Bullying prevention and intervention is the explicit focus on understanding and appreciating differences. Also, to provide a tolerant environment that allows support to those in need and collaboration among teachers, parents, and staff is crucial. In the classroom and in the school, support school-wide rules. Reinforce the rules and be a role model. This self-assessment will help me go back to it when needed and see how I felt in the very beginning of my teaching career. I would like to see how I rate this self-assessment in five years and see why I rated that certain topic different. But this assessment was knowledgeable to read each statement and to see how I felt about it with either I agree, in the middle, or I disagree. But I know before this assessment my beliefs and how I feel about being a fair teacher and providing all my students with the same education. I did feel upset with the self-assessment with the question with race knowing that students of different race gets treated differently and how teachers could even disagree that they don’t think of his/her students in terms of their race or
Boaman5 ethnicity. An educator, I believe should be color blind when it comes to teaching because race or ethnicity should not matter.
