Sentencing reforms   are   needed to reduce the number of women in prison. The premises for this week’s argument is both social and cultural due to the need to reform the number of women in prison. Usually, my opinion on the matter of crime and sentencing is, you commit the crime you serve the time. However, when it comes to women serving out long prison sentences related to arrests for either the sale, possession, or both due to drugs needs to be reformed. As indicted, some women that are victims of domestic violence and abuse and are forced to take drugs, sell drugs, pimped, or trafficked, by men and take the wrap for their crime’s or fall victim to the system ( Domestic violence, trafficking, and the sex trade , n.d.).  In America, it has become increasingly difficult to support your family. Especially when 80% of the families in the U.S. are single parent households, and burden falls on single women and mostly young single women (Johnson, 2024). The gender impacts on women are alarming and the perspective with analysis comes into three main categories, gender, relationships, and systemic roles (Giacomello, 2020). These statistics can make women desperate for a two- household income, relying upon government support systems, such as HUD, WIC, SNAP, and TANF, and have absent fathers, and suffer from patriarchal control, abuse, and violence (Giacomello, 2020). Housing lack of stability and homed in poverty crime ridden streets only increases the probability of criminal activity and chances for imprisonment (Giacomello, 2020). Another major impact is when women are removed from the household for drug related crimes, there is a cultural and social impact on society. The children become orphans, enter the foster care system, have motional and social difficulties that stems from lack of a father figure in the household and an absent working mother, or worse, hang two parents no longer in the picture
to care the children. The children and women are seen as colorectal baggage (Giacomello, 2020). This is why I believe sentencing reforms needs to focus on mental health, counseling, and reunification and safe thriving housing for women in difficult situations. The government can only provide so much, but safety and stability for women can reduce the number of women in prison. References Domestic violence, trafficking, and the sex trade .
