1 Who Would You Hire? Allison Feeney Faculty Of Interdisciplinary Studies, Wilfrid Laurier University UU150: Community Engagement & Service Dr. Amanda Nosko November 20, 2023
2 PART 1: For Part 1 of this optional assignment, you will be asked to imagine that you are a recruiter for a local academic institution. Based on the job summary provided, decide on which skills are most important for this position. You will also be asked to reflect on why you think these skills are important for the job. You can refer to materials from lesson content including professional image, ethics and communication to inform and support the skills you list. For the position of the Student Accessibility Consultant, there are many skills that are essential in order to handle this job with the care and grace that are necessary. Some of the skills necessary for this position are proper manners and workplace etiquette, respect and obligation to student privacy, and empathy for student circumstances. Proper manners and workplace etiquette is important in almost every workplace, especially those who work with a vulnerable sector of the population. The consultant hired needs to be able to create a welcoming and safe space for the students they work with, while still entailing their professionality and affirming that while they’re someone to help the student they are not meant to be seen as the students friend or interact with students outside of the professional setting. Respect and obligation to student privacy is incredibly important when working with those who have disabilities and/or complex trauma. Students need to know that they can trust the consultant with their personal and medical information without it being violated or shared to unnecessary parties. Sharing the individual's medical information to those they didn’t consent to can also violate the individual's medical privacy rights (Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario, 2015), affirming the importance of their respect for the student's privacy around issues. Empathy for student circumstances is greatly important when looking to help provide academic accommodation to the students and ensure success. If the student feels like they are not being taken seriously or respected by their consultant, they will be less likely to share important information in order to be given the help and support they need. Students with disabilities are already 14% more likely
3 to not achieve a university degree than their peers without disabilities (Mcloy & DeClou, 2013) so this prefaces an importance in ensuring that their is respect and empathy for the students condition by the consultant to ensure they are able to be their most successful. To conclude it is essential that someone hired as a student accessibility consultant has proper manners and workplace etiquette, respect and obligation to student privacy, and empathy for student circumstances.
