413 Theorist Grid Instructions : Create a grid in which each of the 9 theorists in this table, writing the concept contribution to the field of education and an application of that concept that you hope to make as you teach students with exceptionalities. Theorist Contribution Application Knight EXAMPLE Adolescents need support and space Teachers are in a unique position to provide both, by listening and responding as necessary Carroll EXAMPLE Love is an essential component of effective teaching. Leonard EXAMPLE Teachers have an obligation to reach out to students of color and students without economic resources. I intend to unobtrusively offer basic items to my poor students and watch my own behavior for inclusiveness. Dr. Ken Moses Help parents cope and grieve after the diagnosis of special needs. I am going to stay in contact with the parents and keep them informed with everything to make sure it is an easy transition for them and their child. Dr. Lewis Terman Support and guide gifted children to help them maintain and protect their talents. I will provide gifted students the proper tools and teaching styles in order to protect and maintain their talents and abilities Dr. Ivar Lovaas Parental and family involvement enhances the improvements the child makes and how long they maintain these improvements. I am going to consistently involve the students’ families, especially when it comes to when they are struggling, so that they can get help even outside the classroom. Children that feel supported by their family and teachers learn better. Dr. Howard Gardner People do not have one singular way of learning, and everyone is very diverse in their abilities. I will provide the best quality education for all my students, even if that means I implement different teaching styles for different students. Not all students are good at the same things, so I will check in on them as we move through the year. Richard Lavoie Everyone gets what they need even if that means they get more than the others. Not everything in the classroom is fair. I am going to tend to my students as how they each individually need it and not compensate by giving the others more attention just because it is “fair”. Some students will need more and others will be okay without special attention. Dr. Reuven Feuerstein Intelligence can me modified with the right tools and guidance. I am going to guide my students and provide them learning tools when they are struggling. Dr. Hans Asperger Main psychologist in studies about Asperger syndrome that he called ‘autistic psychopathy’. It is up to me to give my students the best modifications and accommodations to provide them the best education.
Lee and Marlene Canter Children should be able to learn in a safe and calm environment. I am going to make my classroom a calm and safe space for them to focus and get the best education I can give. Dr. Janet Lerner Children with learning disabilities should not always be in a general education classroom and all teachers need to be able to identify children that are struggling intellectually. I am going to educate myself on the signs of learning disabilities, so I am able to identify them and get them help as soon as possible.
