Jordan Rodriguez SPD 508 Topic 1 – Discussion Question 1 Grand Canyon University Dr. Susan Stone January 11, 2024 The Individuals with Disabilities Act section 300.39 talks about special education and what this term means, what it encompasses and what standards must be met to fulfill the needs of students. When looking at an IEP, it is important that the document contains three components to adequately address specially designed instruction. These three components are: the student's current level of achievement and functional performance, the specific and measurable goals wanting to be obtained, and the students' progress towards the general education curriculum (U.S. Department of Education, n.d.). Knowing these pieces of information will help the team design special instruction to meet the unique needs of the students. It is critical that the law requires teams to explicitly describe specially designed instruction that is different from the instruction provided to other students for the simple fact that special education students need instruction developed to address their specific disability. It is complex and complicated because just like every student is different, every disability is also different and even children with the same disability could require completely different things. Teachers need to have the proper tools to determine when the child needs accommodations to their school day vs. simple modifications to their work. Additionally, the IEP will provide details on when, where, and how the student needs extra help, specifically in what subjects, and with what extra requirements (Center for Parent Information and Resources, 2017). This is vital to the success of
the student because they may not be able to learn at the same pace or in the same way their general education peers do, so we as teachers need to meet them where they are and help them get to where they need to be.
