The first thing I would evaluate would be the ages of the juveniles, the times the crime occurred, and the types of crimes being committed. I wiould then conduct a systematic evaluation to see if the already implemented curfew has really helped reduce crime. According to Austin Peay State University (APSU) (2023), “a systematic evaluation collects large amounts of information that fits with predetermined parameters” (why perform systematic evaluations?). What is my comparison group? My comparison group would consist of a town that is similar in population, demographics, socioeconomic status and similar rates of crime being committed. What data would I collect? I would collect data on crime rates before the curfew as well as crime rates after the curfew. I would do this every three months for the next year. This would ensure that the results were consistent if they were favorable results and if they were unfavorable this would show if the curfew was beginning to have an effect if the results improved in that year time. How would I investigate the degree to which the curfew law is being implemented and enforced as intended? I think that a curfew is a bit difficult to enforce but I think that my best effort would be to require a list of names of any juvenile who was out after curfew, had to be picked up or told to go home or was in a public place after the curfew with no parents present. After a certain number of times of being out after curfew they will be banned from the area for a certain amount of time or given community service. There would have to be police officers hired to make the rounds at certain times and certain areas after the curfew time to make sure that there are no juveniles out and make sure that no crime is taking place. The officers would have to make a log of the times and places that they monitored. I really have no idea how curfew would be enforced but I think this might be the right way to start.
