Brittany Toney February 7, 2024 HCAS129 W5P: Reflection The accuracy of entering patient information in an EHR system is crucial to finding the relevant patient and ensuring that billing information is correct for insurance to cover any procedures or examinations during treatment. Incorrect information can lead to confusion and legal action if information is given to the wrong person also it can cause wrongful surgeries and unneeded treatments which can become a danger for the patient. A coworker violated HIPAA regulations by leaving the EHR system logged in and accessible to others. Additionally, registration forms were left face-up on the desk, which is also a breach of confidentiality. Leaving confidential information in plain sight is a significant violation. To avoid these errors, I recommend leaving a reminder note on every station, asking workers to confirm that they have logged out of the EHR system and off the computer before leaving their station. If they answer no to any of these questions, the sheet of paper will have a step-by-step guide on how to exit the system, log off the computer, and lock the screen. Privacy laws, particularly HIPAA, are critical to managing patient information, and violating them can result in severe consequences such as fines, imprisonment, and civil suits and can damage the reputation of healthcare providers and facilities. Security, privacy, and HIPAA compliance will change my career based on how well I can protect each patient's information. Ignoring these laws will prove that I am not serious about my future in healthcare, and I want to ensure that I follow all guidelines to support a professional career.
