1 6-2 Journal: Applying Your Learning Sara Myers ATH 111 Prof. Kelley Sams
2 This course has dramatically improved my skills and knowledge. I absorbed new concepts during the first week, which helped me appreciate other cultures. Norms and cultural values are the basic rules determining people's behaviors in specific groups or societies (Billet, 2016). Critiquing or judging other people due to their beliefs or practices is wrong. For instance, while Muslims are prohibited from eating pork, Christians allow it. Understanding how co- existence can occur in urban or metropolitan areas is essential for both groups. What I believe is right in one culture may not be right in another. The opposite is true. Cultures comprise varying attitudes and behaviors that specific individuals typically embrace. On the other hand, norms refer to the behaviors and attitudes people usually perceive as usual within their culture. I intend to expand my open-mindedness in studying and analyzing my chosen film. Through this course, I have learned about the principles of cultural relativism. To apply them to film analysis, I will make no judgments when analyzing and assessing cultures. I will try to see them as if I were a part of them.
