Paper: Your Approach Ta Cross-Cultural Interpretation (20%) Purpose: Examine the unique dynamics and challenges facing international public relations professionals as they work in a new culture. Provide an informed discussion of your interpretation of best practices, and how you would decode cultural differences and turn your cultural observations and conclusions into actions that would result in helping you be a better public relations professional in an expat role. Primary Sources: Base the paper on your reading of the book The Culture Map by Erin Meyer, the documentary American Factory (Netflix), and Hofstede’s six cultural dimensions (which can be researched at any time and will be featured in Classes #4-5). If appropriate, feel free to bring in other relevant topics based on research or other class material. Key Content: Your paper needs to - Discuss the value of cultural inferences for public relations professionals. Include examples from The Culture Map and American Factory in your discussion. - Describe the specific steps you’d use when analyzing cross-cultural situations. - Analyze a country (that is neither Japan nor your home country) using approaches described in The Culture Map and Hofstede.| In your paper - Backup all analysis and conclusions with examples and references to The Culture Map, the documentary, Hofstede or other class readings or material. - Emphasize how you would build upon cultural information from the book, the documentary and other relevant course content (Hofstede, etc.) to establish your approach for addressing an expat role as a public relations professional. - In your country analysis, use processes that lead to cross-cultural understanding and then discuss topics that are relevant to a public relations professional. Grading Criteria: - The paper needs to feature your interpretation of the material and explain how you would use it to obtain cultural inferences relevant to a public relations professional working in international settings. - Your conclusions and best practices that you would put into use need to be based on specific topics covered in the material. - Cross-cultural mistakes and negative examples from American Factory and The Culture Map should be used to identify typical culture traps and challenges before discussing how you would manage those basic scenarios. - The paper must demonstrate an understanding of the importance of cultural inferences and how you would reach them and put them to use in typical situations relevant to the practice of international public relations. - Note: It is important that your paper take the primary source material (a general business book, a general process of evaluating and comparing cultures, and general documentary) and interpret it and demonstrate how key learnings could be used by a professional (you!) in the context of international public relations.
