2 o What is guidance? Guidance refers to the process by which an adult teaches, guides, and supports a child in age- appropriate, positive and supportive ways. o Why is it important? Positive and supportive guidance offers numerous benefits to children. They find age- appropriate means of expressing their feelings, wants, views and needs as well as learn self- regulation. Guidance is also important because the continuous process offers children positive and age-appropriate models of behavior. It helps children to develop sensitivity, respect, self- confidence and self-regulation as they grow and learn. Guidance is essential in the process of appropriate behavior occurring as well as prior to, during and following the display of inappropriate behavior, o What factors impact a child's behavior? A child’s behavior is impacted by their level of development, adults providing them with care, age and their environment. It is important for caregivers to understand that children make mistakes and experiment as part of their expected process of development. It is vital to have logical expectations which align with each child’s abilities, age and developmental stage. Caregivers should take time to provide developmentally appropriate explanations and guidance to assist children gain problem-solving skills, confidence and competence. Furthermore, caregivers can be increasingly effective in supporting children and guiding their behavior when they understand their different developmental abilities and stages. 3 Arrange and modify the environment- This step takes into consideration the importance of a children’s environment in shaping their behavior hence attempts to create a setting that is supportive of positive conduct. Guide the whole child-It is important to consider all the developmental domains of a child when guiding behavior. A holistic child prospers under all circumstances into the future. Establish appropriate expectations- When a teacher develops appropriate expectations, it helps to ascertain that a child develops while meeting the desired outcomes. Empower children- This step is important because it seeks to implement a child-centered approach to influencing child behavior. This can be helpful in ensuring that a child is involved thus they understand the important tenets. Develop a partnership with parents, families and others-Since the adults taking care of children are an important factor impacting a child’s behavior, this relationship can provide meaningful insight on how to guide a child.
