Please review the following article: Doing Family Therapy as a New Social Worker: The Do's and Don'ts. While this article mentions family therapy, please consider the skills of a beginning Social Worker/Case Manager as you read this article. After reviewing this article, please consider the following in your discussion post: Please share your thoughts on how you can apply this information as a Social Worker. What do you think are some of the benefits/challenges in working with families? To receive full credit, you will need to post one substantial post. Each discussion post should be a minimum of 250 words or one page. Provide two substantial responses to your classmate’s posts. These responses should also be substantial and provide thoughtful reflection. Your initial discussion post should be posted by Wednesday and your two responses due by Sunday. I think this article is very important for new social workers to have some sort of guide on how to work with families versus just an individual. Even with the first do in the article, which is; do understand the family’s identity. The social worker needs to understand the culture and hierarchy of the family. The social worker will need to understand what beliefs the family has culturally and personally. The social worker wants to be able to work with the family and point out how to make the visits more productive. I think that knowing do’s and don’ts help the social worker get the family more comfortable, trusting and willing to work as a cohesive unit. It also helps them stick to the plan by establishing the treatment plans and helping the family stay on track helps the social worker stay on track. I think some benefits of working with families is that they go through the counseling together, so they grow and go through the treatment together as a family unit. I think a challenge could be getting different family members to open up completely. For example, if there are issues with parental anger, a child may not open up as they don’t want to upset their parent.
