STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO WRITING YOUR METHOD SECTION The method section has two major components: The Participants subsection The Procedure subsection. This guide will walk you through in writing those subsections and combining them into your Method section. STEP 1: First make a heading that says Participants. The heading should be bold and left aligned. Then, under that heading, start a new paragraph and state how many participants you had and who your sample was. Example- Participants The sample used for this study consisted of 117 college students who took part in the study for course credit. YOUR TURN: STEP 2: State the gender make up of the participants. Your percentages should add up to 100%! Example- Of this sample, 23% were males and 77% were female. YOUR TURN:
STEP 3: State the racial/ethnic make up of the sample of the participants. Your percentages should add up to 100%! Example- 58 percent of the sample identified as Black, 30% as White and 12% as Hispanic. YOUR TURN : STEP 4: State the average age, standard deviation and the range of ages in your sample Example - The mean age of participants was 29 years old (SD=3.2) with a range between 18 and 32. YOUR TURN STEP 5: Put Steps 1-4 together to make the Participants subsection of your Method section Example- Participants The sample used for this study consisted of 117 college students who took part in the study for course credit. Of this sample, 23% were males and 77% were female. 58 percent of the sample identified as Black, 30% as White and 12% as Hispanic. The mean age of participants was 29 years old (SD=3.2) with a range between 18 and 32. YOUR TURN:
STEP 6: First make a heading that says Procedure. The heading should be bold and left aligned. Then, under that heading, start a new paragraph and state the design of your study. Was it experimental (did you manipulate an independent variable among different groups and random assignment) or non-experimental (you did not manipulate independent variables- this is typically what most students do when they give a survey) Example- Procedure We employed a non-experimental design for the current study. YOUR TURN STEP 7: State what question you are trying to answer (typically corresponds to the hypothesis) and how you collected data to answer the question. Did you use a survey, did you collect response times, did you collect performance measures, etc? Example- To determine if there was an association between bullying and depression, we used a survey that included 40 questions asking about students’ experience with bullying and their current depression levels. STEP 8: State what participants did. Example- Participants accessed the study online through the SONA system and signed a consent form that detailed the nature of the study and explained that participation in the study implied consent to analyze their responses. They were also assured of the confidentiality of their responses. Next, students were asked to fill out the 40 question survey pertaining to depression and bullying information. Participants had no time limit to finish the survey. Once students completed the survey they were thanked for their time. YOUR TURN : STEP 9: Put Steps 6-8 together to make your procedure subsection Example- Procedure We employed a non-experimental design for the current study. To determine if there was an association between bullying and depression, we used a survey that included 40 questions asking about students’ experience with bullying and their current depression levels. Participants accessed the study online through the SONA system and signed a consent form that detailed the nature of the study and explained that participation in the study implied consent to analyze their responses. They were also assured of the confidentiality of their responses. Next, students were asked to fill out the 40 question survey pertaining to depression and bullying information.
Participants had no time limit to finish the survey. Once students completed the survey they were thanked for their time. YOUR TURN STEP 10: Combine Step 5 and Step 9 to create your Method section. Be sure to create the header Method that is centered and bold Example- Method Participants The sample used for this study consisted of 117 college students who took part in the study for course credit. Of this sample, 23% were males and 77% were female. 58 percent of the sample identified as Black, 30% as White and 12% as Hispanic.
