ILLICIT DRUG USE AND DEVIANT BEHAVIOR 2 Abstract The study focuses on illicit drug use and deviant behavior in youth subculture. The use of drugs is a common problem in many societies, which contributes to engaging in inappropriate behaviors and attitudes. It is important to recognize the role of illicit drugs in influencing the behaviors of youths. The youths are exposed to numerous risk factors including peers and negative attitudes from the community. For the student, students between 15 years and 24 years were considered. In addition, parents and other people from the community were considered. Some of the details collected include the age of the respondents, gender, social starts and other demographic details. A questionnaire will be used in collecting the details from the respondents and it will be posted online. The choice of online is to increase the number of possible respondents including their perception of the problem. Moreover, it is a confident tool to reach a diverse and multicultural background even though the study will be limited to teenagers in America. Privacy and confidentiality will be championed throughout the study.
ILLICIT DRUG USE AND DEVIANT BEHAVIOR 3 Introduction Drug abuse is a major problem that affects the community and society in different ways. The elderly and the young continue to abuse drugs with differing consequences. Addiction and drug related disorders are directly related with the abuse of drugs. However, it is important to recognize the impact of abuse of drugs and its contribution to deviant behavior. The strategic approach is to determine whether when youth’s abuse drugs it leads to deviant behaviors. Consumption of drugs affects reasoning and thinking process. It also points to the changing objectives and requirements of the community meaning learning more about the topic would provide a better approach of addressing the problem. Literature Review Bukstein (2016) carried out a study to recognize the abuse of drugs and alcohol among adolescents in the United States. The author also relied on the work of Johnston et al. (2013) who found out that 25.8 percent of high school students had used the illicit drug while more than 50% had used alcohol. The number of illicit drug users also increased when teenagers became older. Bukstein (2016) found out numerous problems associated with such an arrangement including potential health disorders such as substance use disorders and conduct disorder. Conduct disorder is associated with deviant behave because of delinquency, deviant social behavior, problem behavior, and aggression. The level of difference among these conditions differ but the underlying resemble is the social deviance fundamental. Bukstein (2016) also founded out a direct relationship between the abuse of drugs and the conduct disorder. Therefore, the author was able to link the disorder with drug abuse.

ILLICIT DRUG USE AND DEVIANT BEHAVIOR 4 Berge et al. (2016) studied the role of parenting style on adolescent and the behaviors the teenager engages including substance abuse. The authors posted that the youth might start using drugs at an early age because of the pressures and powers of the parents. The authors collected data from 1,268 adolescents between the age of 12 and 13 years. The measurement focused on risk factors for adolescent drug abuse, and the impact of the drugs on the children. The authors found out that the neglectful parenting style increased the chances of youth abusing the drugs. Even though the parenting style did not have a direct relation with the deviant behaviors, it is deviant that a direct connection of drug abuse and deviant behavior exists. Continued consumption of drugs according to the authors lead to problems such as the use of other drugs, the provision of alcohol by parents, delinquent behavior, and deviant peers. The authors concluded that the current behaviors and attitudes of parenting style do not have a huge impact on the development of teenager in influencing deviant behaviors but does not connect drug abuse and deviant behaviors. However, the student recognizes the problem of using illicit drugs into making the youths to continue engaging in inappropriate behaviors. Mulvey, Schubert & Chassin (2010) studied the pathways to desistance in which more than 1,300 serious juveniles were followed for seven years. Analyzing the details, the authors found out chronic/serious offenders extensively used illicit drugs and had problems with substance use disorders. Dispositional factors such as depression, stress, and behavioral disintegration contributed to an increase in criminal activity and further substance abuse. The authors also founded the serious offending and substance use decreased in late adolescence. Therefore, the authors concluded that the user of drugs increased the risk of deviant behaviors. The types of deviant behaviors include attitudes, criminal activities, and ulterior motives, which
ILLICIT DRUG USE AND DEVIANT BEHAVIOR 5 affects negatively the development and growth of the youth. The authors also presented that youths should be prohibited from using drugs to reduce the risk of deviant behaviors. Wongtongkam et al. (2014) studied the role of substance abuse in deviant behavior in Thailand. The authors collected the details from 1778 students in which a variety of drugs was measured. Some of the drugs included glue sniffing and ecstasy. The authors also analyzed the reasons behind the decision for students to start or continue abusing drugs and found out that friends increased the chance in which such individuals would engage in criminal and bad behaviors. In addition, students with a high level of moral belief and social skills had a lower risk associated with possible abuse of drugs. The abuse of drugs contributed to additional problems for the students. These students would engage in inappropriate behaviors and actions. For example, fights were common because the students were unable to control themselves or support their ideological expectations. The students would also engage in those activities, which would provide more drugs for the students. Therefore, criminality would increase due to substance abuse and related behaviors. Research Question Does the use of illicit drugs contribute to deviant behavior in youth subculture? Hypothesis H1: There is a relationship between illicit drug use and deviant behavior. Population
ILLICIT DRUG USE AND DEVIANT BEHAVIOR 6 The population will be parents, youth and random people. The objective is to listen to the views of these individuals in recognizing the role of their respective behaviors in creating negative attitudes. The expectation is to collect information from more people and people from diverse backgrounds to ensure that the data can be generalizable. The targeted youths will be between ages 15 and 24. Both genders will be considered. The parents or any person with children will be required to provide additional information. Additional views will be collected from the public to supplement the already collected details and information. Additional information to be collected will include income, social status, marital status of parents, and drug- related habits. Definition of Variables The dependent variable investigated in the current study is the association of different illicit drug use and deviant behavior in youth subculture. The use of four drugs: alcohol, marijuana, cocaine/heroine and prescription drugs will be analyzed. The objects are to understand the role of these variables in impacting the behavior and attitudes of youth towards engaging in deviant behavior. Some independent variables were considered. The independent variables included mental health treatment, school enrolment, general health, gender, race, age, and deviant behavior. The objective is to understand the role and impact of the dependent variables in influencing certain behaviors and attitudes beyond the comp9oennts of normalcy. Data Collection Method

ILLICIT DRUG USE AND DEVIANT BEHAVIOR 7 The purpose of the study is to examine the impact of illicit drug use on the deviant behavior of the youth subculture. The aim is to determine whether a direct correlation exists between using drugs and direct behaviors of the youth in regards to going against the norm and traditions of the society or community. In collecting the data, it is hard for youths to come out and declare that they are abusing drugs. The aim is to use the online mechanism and strategies to reach these youths. An extensive questionnaire will be developed in which there would be segments for youth, parents and other members of the community: three different questionnaires. These questionnaires will be posted online such as a platform like Survey Monkey. The aim is to ensure the correct information from these numerous individuals is collected that applies or aims to answer the current question. The online questionnaire will be posted for a full two weeks to ensure the maximum number of respondents provide the information. The flexibility allows the youths to present their respective information anonymously. Through the use of three different questionnaires, it becomes easier to compare the details and the perceptions of the respondents. For example, the youths will; provide their different perspective, which might not resonate with the views and expectations of the wider community. The parents also have the expectations and know the problem of drug abuse and the possible reasons contributing to the complication. Other people will contribute without considering their relation with the youths and parents. Collecting such diverse information is important in creating an effective system that respects the views of others, and champions the transparency of any program, which might be implemented. The outcome is informed persons through extensively collecting the appropriate information.
