2 Discussion How effective are local law enforcement personnel at distinguishing between victims of human trafficking and those engaged in prostitution? Human trafficking involves exploiting an individual by force, coercion, or fraud. Human trafficking can include sex trafficking, labor trafficking, and domestic servitude. When human trafficking involves the sex trade, it can be easily confused with prostitution. Today, the police are ill-prepared to distinguish between human trafficking that involves the sex trade and prostitution. However, with more training, police officers can learn how to identify victims of human trafficking from those engaged in prostitution by identifying. Some of the distinctions between human trafficking and prostitution include victims of human trafficking usually do not have any form of identification or money, always avoid eye contact, have the branding of known pimps, have unexplained bruises or cuts, are aggressive towards police officers, and always dishonest or change stories about who they are ( Linebach, & Kovacsiss, 2022) . This is not the case for prostitutes, who always carry their identification and have money on them, among other identifiers. Should we even bother distinguishing between them? Police officers should try distinguishing between the victims of human trafficking and prostitution as this could help save the lives of trafficked individuals. Unlike prostitutes who choose prostitution as a means of income due to poverty or abuse, victims of human (sex) trafficking are forced into the sex trade against their will through coercion, fraud, or
3 force/threats. Such persons' lives are always in danger, and by police learning to identify them from prostitutes, they can save their lives. Does the general public care about the differences between the two, and how do we inform them about those differences? The public care about the differences between sex human) trafficking and prostitution. The public understands that prostitution is always by choice, while sex trafficking is by force or coercion, where an individual's life is always in danger. The police should educate the public about human trafficking and how it's different from prostitution by creating awareness of ways to spot, identify and help victims of human trafficking ( Linebach, & Kovacsiss, 2022) . The public should understand the necessary steps to take when identifying a person who they believe is being trafficked. What can the justice system do to help victims of sex trafficking? The justice department can help fund and support the delivery of services that are important in helping victims of human trafficking regain their lives, such as case management, legal assistance, and housing. The justice department can help prosecute the perpetrators of human trafficking and ensure they formally apologize to the victims and their families ( Linebach, & Kovacsiss, 2022) . This will help such victims to start the recovery journey from the trauma of human trafficking.
